I am considering getting one. What does this do to your electric bills per month? Is it a big spike?
Thanks for the information!

I have an old school Hypoxico unit. It adds about $30/month to my electric bill when I run it.

To anyone who has used an altitude tent - how much time improvement do you think you got from using it?

Do any of you know how these things work? At real altitude, less oxygen is available for use because of the pressure differential at that altitude. But these machines don't work by changing the air pressure: they just filter out some of the oxygen in the air. So...they must replace that with something. What is that something? Nitrogen?

The manufacturer's websites I've checked never admit how they do it. Higher Peak even claims "No chemicals or additional gases," but that doesn't make sense to me. If you take a given volume of air and reduce the amount of oxygen in it, to maintain the same volume of air you have to add something. What is it?

I have been using my tent for 2 seasons now.

Where you will notice the biggest change is on your daily aerobic runs and then in your recovery between sets on the track.
Its hard say that you will run X% faster. That is hard to measure without careful journaling for years with and without it, but then you just have the natural progression to deal with, which would throw off the study.

I would say that you don't just feel the better while your running its not like your a brand new runner, so don't expect that, but you will notice little by little that while you feel the same as before you are just now able to get more out of the prior level of fatigue. That and like I said you will get more out of your recovery during your rest between reps on the track.

Hope that helps

They don't add anything you retard. They filter out oxygen and this lowers the % of O2 in the air. Thus, the %'s of all the other gasses present in the air that's been filtered goes up (remember percentage is a relative measure). So in that sense, yes, there are more mols of N2, CO2, AR, etc. in the volume of air that occupies the tent then would be present in an equal volume of air outside the tent. But that doesn't mean that the filter unit "adds chemicals" to the air.

Duh. Thanks. I guess I didn't think about it that way because in the natural environment around us (not talking about altitude), when oxygen levels measure low that means something displaced that oxygen and that something could be hazardous to humans.

So with these tents, the pump takes in, say 1 liter of air and strips out, say, 25% of the oxygen which was about 5% of the air volume, then pumps the remaining 0.95 liters of "air" into the tent so you now have like 85% nitrogen and 15% air instead of the usual 80/20 mix? (ignoring the other minor constituents).

What do the machines do with the oxygen? Is it just vented to the air out of the machine (increasing the oxygen concentration right outside the tent...).

Thanks for helping me not be so retarded.

For me, doing nearly the same workouts, except for using the tent, across an entire year of doing about a dozen of the same races before and after starting the tent, I averaged 0:11/mi faster from 5k to 10k with the tent usage.

I've got a Hypoxico Everest Ascent altitude training system for sale as well. If you might be interested, feel free to check it out on Boulder Craigslist. http://boulder.craigslist.org/spo/2379192530.html

Along with the tent and generator I'm including an oxygen sensor that will tell you precisely the % oxygen that is inside the tent. With this information you can 'tune' the tent to the precise altitude that you're looking for.

The generator's exhaust is oxygen enriched and quickly recombines into the surrounding room. Thanks,
