CU lands excellent recruit 4/24/2011 2:37PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm really excited that CU finally got one of our in-state blue-chip recruits. We've lost so many good recruits not to mention Evan Appel, Kevin Williams, Nicolls and others.
I really feel Connor Winter will put the hurt on all these.
He swept the 800-1600-3200 as a Junior. I don't think any of our great distance runners that this state has produced have accomplished that as a junior. This past weekend at the Dakota Ridge Invitational he ran a 9:09-3200m / 1:54-800m double ( I think the 3200m state record on Colorado soil is 9:05 by Brent Vaughn)in chilly 40 degree weather and all by himself.

That's a nice triple and it sounds like this kid has a lot of upside; however, being straight up, it is not as impressive when it is spread out over 3 days.

Btw, CU's achievemenst in the NCAA speak for themselves, but it is going to be a rough transition for this middle distance kids having to train with a team who competes for cross country titles...CU's record for keeping kids like this healthy is speculative.

Hi Trackcoach,

One thing that does make it more impressive that his times were 1:52 800m 4:22 1600 and 9:17 3200 all at altitude. Also colorado high school greats such as brett vaughn or adam goucher never 3peated as a junior like that

Winning titles has a lot to do with your competition. In Oregon Stuart Eagon never won a title, neither did Ryan Vail...why you might ask, because Rupp was around. I'm excited that this kid is staying local, kid might be an all timer...as impressive as it is that the kid knows how to win...hard to compared him against others based off of state competitions...IMO.

Haven't heard of the kid before this, thanks for the post!

It was previously reported that Connor Winter had committed to Portland. Did he flip?

Connor Winter is a very good runner to bad he was unable to make a name for himself this past XC season due to injury. Hopefully he can make up for it by having a good track season.

CU has success in the middle distances as well. Ever heard of Jenny Barringer the NCAA record holder in the 1500?

CU worked out well for Jenny and several others as well; I don't have a lot of bad things to say about CU. Obviously CU is doing somethings right becasue of their success, but personally I would not send my kids to CU if they are a 800/mile type. Whetmore from what I have read and seen, expects middle distance athletes to be major contributors in XC and I think he is too quick to move athletes up in distance. Some 800/mile types are good XC runners and can run up to the 5k, but a lot of them are just not built for it and end up injuried.

I like Oregon's and UVA's appraoch where they accept what they can get in XC and even lets their MD athletes run on 4x4 at times. I don't think athletes like Wheaton, Loxsom or Andrews, etc., would have had the same success in a program like CU.

Btw, this is a personal observation and is backed up by data.

You would never send your kids to CU if they were an 800/mile type??? CU is one of the best programs in the country, unless your kids are throwing down 1:49 800s in HS, they cannot afford to be that choosy.

Add Pifer to the list of successful Mid-D runners at Colorado.

redshirting apparently. 3:49 is pretty legit for a freshman, equates to about a 3:44/3:43 if you believe in that stuff. Not many CU guys go much faster than this up in the thin air.

The US's only two 1500m world champions both went to CU. That pretty much does away the myth that it is a distance only school.

Oh, for goodness' sake, even I know he's talking about women. Sheesh.

Not that Mary had anything whatever to do with the current coaching regime at Colorado...

The subject of the thread was a male runner so why are only women runners considered as examples. Lagat was a world champion who did not attend CU.

Seriously though, Connor seems to be a real talent and I hope he has a great career at CU.
