Let's hear from the non-elites among us out there. How did you feel? Did you run fast? What did you think of your performance?

I was 15 minutes slower than what I had wanted, but my training hadn't been the best and it was my first Boston. Wow that course is hard.

Personally, I felt running with a crowd of people (I ran 3:10) with a tailwind made it feel too hot for me. There were no clouds. I was happy to get a breeze when we did and running closer to Boston and when crowds thinned and the roads opened up it felt much cooler. If you are ready and ready for the course, it could have been really fast, but if you can't handle all that downhill, the tailwind is only going to make you run faster, which is only going to trash your legs faster. Still, Boston is always Boston and I hope to return next in better condition, even if with less-than-perfect conditions.

Sadly, I never picked up my bib due to injuries over the winter. Regretting that decision to say the least.
Thanks for asking.

Bump. I really want to know how people who were actually ran the race felt about the course and conditions. People that weren't sub-2:05.

I didn't even come close to running a PR at Boston...I was in the best shape of my life without question but the hills at the beginning trashed my quads so badly that I had to kinda call it a day early. I ended up jogging it in something like 30minutes behind my PR. I can tell you I did not notice the wind at all as far as 'pushing me along.' It was a fast day though, I just didn't listen to all the advice about saving your legs on those early hills...

45 male here, I ran 1:30 off my PR (3:15:xx vs. 3:13:xx) but I had a relatively short training window and ran conservative early, I think I had a PR in me. Obviously weather helped, but not across the board as I know a lot of runners who bonked the last half just like usual! It was a great day to run, congrats to Mutai, Hall, and all the others!

Not even close. I had missed a lot of training due to a hamstring injury. I actually started thinking about dropping out around mile 9, but never did. I ran a new personal worst of 3:17:49. I was surprised that so many people dropped out or ran way slower than they expected to.

One out of the eight people I knew running ran a PR.

Ignoring those that were injured, under-trained or Boston rookies, everyone I know ran at least a course PR.

Count me in on the Boston PR list.

God damn my quads are still shredded. It's amazing how that course just crushes you during those last five miles.

The tailwind isn't going to compensate for under-training, stupid pacing, or unfamiliarity with the course. However, if you had those 3 things down, I'd say you should have PRed on Monday.

Two friends ran. One was a woman who was decently prepped and equalled her PR, the other a man whose prep was definitely his best ever and he was one minute slower than PR, despite running conservative the early miles. Haven't debriefed either one.

Yeah, I was a boston rookie. I thought was pacing was OK in the first half, but I guess my goal was unrealistic.

The excitement of the day has worn off and now the disappointment has set in.

How can you train for Boston? I had 8 X 80 mile weeks and the weeks before that was 65-70. I had several 20+ mile runs. My legs were just shot by mile 15. It was painful.

So everyone ran at least a course PR, except for those that didn't?

Went into the race in great shape, not PR or Master's PR shape, but Sub 3 shape for sure. Qualified by running 2010 Little Rock in 3:09:59 and improved my qualifier by running 3:07:22 @ Thunder Road in NC this past Dec, both races I was not in marathon shape at all. By this I mean I did zero long runs. (longest for each at the time was no more than 10 miles) I ran 3:17 on Monday, (2:51 in 08 at Boston) However, I went out a bit fast, felt the wind over much of the course, it helped me the first half (or did it hurt me!) I ate shit hard (stole that one from AG) the last 10 miles. I had 6 runners who all one but one did the exact same training plan I did. All but 2 PRd. One did not even come close but just had a bad day, ( followed her race plan and said her legs just didn't feel it) The other one who did not PR actually ran almost as fast as she did last year but had done the Baatan Marathon. The others set 30 second, 2 min, 5 min and 6 min PRs...they all followed the race plan put out BEFORE we knew about the wind..I just ran like an idot!

You overtrained or did not taper correctly. If your legs were shot by 15 then your legs were shot before the race even began.

Weren't there like 20,000 people running? Surely most of the people weren't even getting any benefits from a tailwind due to thousands of people behind them breaking it?

I PR'd by 1:12, to 2:56:33 (my previous pr was at Boston in 2008, also a perfect day, though without the tailwind). The tailwind was nice, but it was crowded and I think the effect was dissipated a bit by the runners close behind me. No complaints, though. It was a magical day to run and great to be part of history.

I PRd by 7 seconds. My previous PR was from Boston last year.
