Is Comcast Ripping me off?? 9/16/2010 9:06AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I know cable is a luxury, and I am not particularly wealthy. But this month my bill came back at $160, which includes TV and internet service.

This is just the basic package. No HBO or movie channels. No sports package either.

Comcast starts off by giving its customers a one year promotional period, where I was paying $90 ( almost half) for the same services.

Is there an alternative worth looking into? Am I stuck with Comcast and these prices? I'd hate to have to cut my cable completely.

Help.

Without even reading the body of your text I know the answer.

Yes, Comcast is ripping you off. Switch to another provider. They are awful.

Wow, you're getting screwed. Call and threaten to cancel. They'll give you pretty much anything you want. Of course, you do kinda have to be prepared to cancel if it comes to that. If they ever don't cave to me, I'm switching to Verizon.

I don't know about ripping you off. Probably. However, it is well known that they have big introductory deals and that your costs will go up when that introductory period expires. Call up and see what introductory deal is going on now. Then ask if you can switch your service over to something slightly different and get the new introductory deal. They have done this for me before. And if they are unwilling to negotiate, capitalistic principle would then suggest that you cancel. Quit giving your money to a company that doesn't provide you with a service at a price you deem acceptable.

Look into Verizon Fios or AT&T U-Verse. This is Fiber optic to the home. In most cases, you will save money.

or

Search by zip code to see if either is available in your area. Good luck

You are being ripped off.

On Friday, U-verse will be installed and it's bye-bye Comcast at the McGhee household.

I don't have to read anything other than your subject to know that the answer is yes. If you have any Comcast services at all, at any price, you are being ripped off. They are one of the worst companies in the United States. Their services are horrible (cable, internet, and phone going out unexpectedly and staying off for long periods of time), and their customer service is deplorable (a nationwide survey done last year ranked Comcast as the worst US company for customer service). On top of that, they are very expensive and deceptive with pricing. If you have any alternative, go with that. I will always choose another company over Comcast (except in the case of my business where they are literally the only internet service provider available in our building so I am forced to use them). I wish people would stop complaining about Comcast and start canceling. Then they might actually get the message that they suck on a massive scale and that their business model is complete and utter garbage.

Please cancel your service and use another provider - for everyone's sake.

I would gladly switch to an alternative but I just checked U-verse and FIOS Verizon and both do not have service in my area (zip code). RCN only covers the Northeast. I live in Florida.

cancel all but basic cable.(< 10/month)

by law they have to sell basic cable cheap.

most digital tvs can get 20 channels or so including 6-8 stations in hd off of the cable line.

or ditch even the basic cable if you live in a crowded area where a $15 antenna can get the same 6-8 hd channels.

Use netflix/playon to ps3/wii/xbox/pc to get the rest of content....there are ways...streaming quality is getting better and better.

fios & directtv will do the same outrageous price gouging once they get the chance.

this way you only have to do the negotiating with comcast on internet.

my 2 cents...

i work for a division of comcast and get free cable. actually, just pay taxes, so it's like $7 bucks a month. i lived in a building in chi that was only rcn. i paid like 125 a month for basic tv and internet. rcns service is hands down better than comcast. however, the product itself isnt even worth discussing. comcast is 10x better than rcn/dish/directtv, etc. their service may suck and their prices might be a little higher, but the product delivered is way better.

not sure that helps at all. if you're worried about money, switch. but for the extra 20-40 bucks a month, i think you're getting a lot more value over the competitors.

but still, call and complain. sounds dumb, but it does work. even lie and say it hasnt been working, or you know a guy getting a better rate. but if you call and complain, they may reduce your monthly cost a little. it costs them about 20 cents a month to provide you cable/internet, so they dont want to lose you.

if is costs 20 cents to produce then why is charter cable bankrupt or comcast stock flat for 10 years?

idea?

I recomend the Dish or RCN. Comcast is bad. I have no choice where I am currently living and am dropping around $2K a year on them.

Call the Comcast and threaten to leave, and then bargain down. I have a number of friends who have done this and they all pay different prices for the same plan. Some got $15-50 off their plans and channels added.

Yes - comcast is ripping you off.

Yes - yes there are plenty of alternatives

No - you are not stuck with cable

Yes - you have a bad attitude, why would you "hate to have to" cut of the cable completely? Are you in love, or hynotized? It's only a cable company, that is screwing you, nothing else.

I've not ever had cable, in fact I've never purchased a tv. I got an antenna a neighbor was tossing away twenty years ago and put that on the chimney on the roof. Later I added an amplifier that got better coverage. Eventually the antenna fell apart so I got a new one on sale at RS for $35, and a new amplifier as the one was was going kapoot. When the transition came out, I got two comverters for a total of $1.

This has all served me quite well, though I rarely watch any tv. If you go this route I highly recommended getting a better amplifier than the RS models, the prices are about the same. Good antennas can be found anywhere. I got 19 stations before the transition, and 13-19 now, I've not bothered to check. That is plenty.

The internet is much better than tv. Or just do something else. Get a life.
