Robby Andrews: 2010 World Junior Championships 800m could he win? 6/10/2010 10:21PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Yesterday Robby Andrews ran 26. to finish his NCAA 800m heat in 1:45 and looked very relaxed which have many excited for the NCAA 800m Final. The NCAA 800m promises to be a magical and with decent weather 1:44 is almost certain.

SHOULD Robby Andrews try and make the 2010 World Junior Team? It's definitely a prestigous title as the last 800m World Junior Champion in 2008 is none other than ABUBAKER KAKI who won in 1:45.60- he also ran 1:42.69 that year.

Do you think Robby Andrews should try for the team and if so do you think he could win the 800m World Jr GOLD?

Nope no American has ever won the 800m World Jr Gold. Robby could probably sneak in for 4th or Bronze at best behind two unknown Kenyans.

There has been no world junior in the IAAF list capable of beating Robby for 2 years. He would be the #2 qualifier if he declares for the USATF Nationals. He presently is the #16 SENIOR 800m runner in the world, and is poised to move into the IAAF 800m ALL TIME World Junior List tomorrow. He doesn't belong wasting his effort in Juniors.

Go to Lausanne and play with the BIG BOYS.

Post of an F'tard. Bekele didn't belong wasting his efforts against...everyone? Please, get a clue. Every step in someones career is an important one. World JRs would not be a joke and a great opportunity for him.

OMG did you say no junior capable of beating Robby Andrews in 2 years. Hey did you even bother reading the original post. A. Kaki ran 1:42.69 (World Junior Record) in 2008 and won the World Junior title that year as well.

So your saying A. Kaki who ran 1:42.69 as a junior wasn't capable of beating Robby Andrews? Your DEFINITELY wrong on this one coach d and trust me by the middle of July there will be other juniors in the 1:45 range. SO it would not be a run-away for Robby; however, I think he have a GOOD shot at the title and should make it his primary goal after NCAA's. Go to World Junior Championships Robby!

The World Junior Championship is a very prestigous title and one Robby Andrews definitely should target after the NCAA's!

What about Elias Geydon, Ajee Wilson, and Chelsey S? Didn't Chelsey just place 4th in the 1500m at last years World Youth?

Why aren't Elias, Ajee, and Chelsey running in the upcoming marquee high school mile at NY? Maybe they are targeting making the US team for World Junior Track Championships. After his disappointing run at NCAA I think Andrew would be wise to try and make the team as well.

Elias is running at the Portland meet tomorrow I believe.

Chelsey Sveinsson is injured unfortunately (or was).

Robby was so sure he would win NCAA Outddors he didn't even registered for the US Trials for World Juniors. C. Loxsom who has run 1:46 is the top athlete for the meet starting 23 June.

Robby still has time to register but why would he just so he could get trounced again but this time by junior foreigners.

A quick look at the IAAF top list right now would put Andrews in the number 1 spot and Loxsom in the number 2 spot at worlds.

That said at this very moment there is probably some Kenyan in Eldoret getting a shiny new passport with a guesstimated birthday of January 1 1992 and a plane ticket to Canada in a couple weeks. This "kid" is also routinely running 1:47-8 on dirt tracks with roots and potholes and whatever else at 8000 ft altitude. This "kid" will run out in front of Andrews in 49.5 or so cause aint no silly mzungo gunna beat him. Hopefully Andrews is ready for it.

This "kid" will go on to get 4th or 5th in some diamond league race or rieti or something with a shiny new pr later in the summer.

Yeah he could run against "kids" and they will all work him. You are, what I would refer to as, a dummy. Those "kids" are legit. The two best 800 guys in the world are 1-2 years older than andrews, world champions, and straight up BETTER. Show me an American who can run 1:42 at 18, then we can talk, on the world scene 1:45 is shit.

Elijah Greer is also a freshman who would quaify for World Juniors, and he is also 1.46 like Loxsom.

1:45 on the world scene as a junior is very elite. Yes Kaki ran 1:42.69 as a junior but he is now in the open ranks and not someone Andrew and other juniors have to face in junior competition. Even on the world scene 1:45 would get you to final in most Olympics and Worlds; therefore, it would do alot more at World Juniors (you run 1:45 at World Jrs. and its definitely a medal and maybe Gold).

Do you know how many people have ever run in the 1:42's? Not many senior men have ever done that and we're just talking about the junior level.

1:45.xx as a junior is still a great time on the world stage.

It was pretty impressive for Andrews to run a 1:45 prelim, but it doesn’t matter because that’s not where you become a legend in the NCAA; you become one standing on the 1st place podium spot after your final. I could see Andrews running at Worlds Jr., but winning it? We’re talking about World Class competition, not just facing Wheating alone or facing other NCAA 800m runners. Pretty sure there’s several juniors the same or better than Wheating and if Andrews can’t put away Wheating every time they face off, I don’t see how Andrews can just walk in World Jr. Champs. thinking “I’m a gold medal favorite.” Is it possible Andrews can medal (silver or bronze)? Maybe, but I don’t know because I need to see what Andrews could be up against to make my prediction. But I will say that I can’t see him winning; it’ll take more than a 1:45 to do it and who knows what type of race it could be. The race could be a sit and kick running a slow time or an all out race running a fast time. If it’s a sit and kick, Andrews would have a better shot.

Nice list. Aaron Evans is on there, as are Lance Roller and Robby Andrews. Interesting to see that Gavyn Nero (Baylor) was ahead of all of them last year.

World Junior 800m is seldomly won with times faster than 1:45, in fact more often its 1:46 or slower than it has been 1:45 or faster. SO yes its POSSIBLE FOR ANDREW TO WIN GOLD at World Jrs. if he could produce the same effort in the World Jr finals as he did in his NCAA 800 semi!

Could Robby Andrews win Gold at the World Jr, Yes. Is it likely probably not since he was most likely peaking for NCAA's. The Worlds are less than alittle more than 5 weeks away so he still have time to rest (2-3 days easy running) and attempt another mini training phase; however, would he be sharp enough to make the team at the US Trials starting 23 June?

Robby Andrews ran one race after his amazing 1:45 semi 800m at NCAA and every said it was a horrible race tactically for the Freshman. So maybe 1:45 is not his limit since majority of the posters agree he didn't occupy the best strategy in the final. Could Robby Andrews be capable of faster than his 800m semi this year, YES! Should he attempt to make the U.S World Jr team, HE SHOULD and then the answer to so many question could be answered at the Jr Championships.
