(Thread title from the letsrun front page.) I think we are. Gay's 9.69 on the heels of Bolt's 9.58 last year was an omen. "People CAN do what Bolt does". Bolt is merely leading the way. I predict that the 10th fastest 100m performance of 2010 is sub 9.80, and that's INSANE compared to any other year. |

No. Great sprinting is about head-to-head matchups, when they matter--i.e. at big meets like the Olympics. Ben vs Carl was the best by far, and will be difficult to top. They could duck each other because it was an Olympic year, but in a non-Olympic year, w/o Worlds, the best would need to meet a couple of times to make it the best ever. Great years are about great races combined with great times, not just great times alone. What makes this year interesting, though, is the varied distances that people are doing (other than Powell). Powell and Wariner should do some 200's, and Spearmon should work on his start and do some 100's, or maybe try a 400. Likewise, that great 800 guy should try a 400, and Bekele should try everything from 200 up! |

bolt reputed 43 split at 400m early. powell 9.75w. Gay 19.41 straight and sub 45. should be an awfully good year for sprinting, but with the lack of world or olympic competition, it cannot be the best ever. |

With all due respect, the ones who called you an idiot probably would have done so, with or without your prediction. The personal attacks likely have more to do with your past history, than this single prediction. That just gave them a reason, but any reason will do. Your prediction was so bold, that few are prepared to give you partial credit. Lacing predictions with caveats, disclaimers, and conditions could make them more true, but boring. Interesting predictions requires a high probability of failure, with a slim possibility of success, just to maintain excitement. Bold predictions, per se, are not idiotic, but certainly a catalyst for lively debate. I gathered from your more thoughtful critics, that even before the "tweet", the prevailing opinion was that he wouldn't even attempt the 5K record, because he would focus on the longer events, and therefore, wouldn't have the wheels to do it. Most of them agreed that a 10K record was likely. Bairu ran a great race, as did several others.
