Galen Rupp scrubs his 10,000-meter attempt for Friday's Oregon Relays, but might run Saturday at Hayward Field

Oregon Track Club Elite/Portland coach Alberto Salazar said Thursday afternoon that Galen Rupp would not run in the 10,000 meters Friday in the Oregon Relays.

But, Salazar said, Rupp might run in Eugene on Saturday night if UO coach Vin Lananna and assistant athletic director Michael Reilly can arrange it.

While Salazar and Rupp haven't specifically talked about the U.S. record of 27 minutes 13.98 seconds, it is believed to be within Rupp's range if conditions are right.

They had hoped to run in the scheduled 10,000 Friday night in the Oregon Relays.

But, Salazar said, "It's going to be too windy and cold."

Rupp is listed in the accepted entries for an elite 10,000 to be held in Saturday night's Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford. And he could run there.

But Salazar is worried about allergens in the air at Stanford. Readings taken for airborne allergen levels last week in Palo Alto, Calif., near the Stanford campus, were off the charts.

The preferred option would be for Rupp to run a 10,000 at about 9 p.m. at Hayward on Saturday, approximately two hours after the conclusion of the last high school event of the Oregon Relays.

UO spokesman Greg Walker said Oregon officials are looking at several options. One would be to adjust the meet schedule, and move the Oregon Relays men's 10,000 to Saturday night. Or, Lananna and Reilly could set up a special 10,000 on Saturday for Rupp by putting together a last-minute field that included some UO runners and, possibly some local pros.

Walker said Oregon officials would make a final decision by mid-day on Friday.

Well, Rupp needs a lot of things to go right for a record attempt. Whatever works.

Unless he announces that he actually is going for the american record, they should move nothing around for him. Talk about being picky.

More like talk about being smart. Why waste such a hard effort if more conducive conditions are available? That Salazar is a smart one.

I'm a huge rupp fan but he should learn a lesson from god himself, timmy tewbow. Do you think tebow would ever pussy out on a race because of allergen levels being off the chart??? HELL NO, tebow is a winner and if rupp wants to be a winner he should go run at stanford. Tebow could run a 400 in 47 seconds in snowstorm while dragging an oxen if thats what he had to do to set an AR. I was fine with it when rupp was debating between which meet to run at but this is getting ridiculous. We can't baby him. What is he going to do if its raining in london 2012, ask the officials to change the schedule and push the 10k back a day? Sack up galen, big timmy got drafted cause he has heart, show you have some too.

Maybe too smart.
All the uncertainty can't be a good thing for Rupp.
And fussing so much about the conditions isn't going to help cultivate his mental toughness. It seems to send the message that "we don't trust you to pop a great time unless every factor is working to your advantage."

I appreciate Galen's tenacity and competitiveness in races, but why make such a spectacle about a damn race? Either run it or don't. You're not Usain Bolt or even ranked top 10 in any event at the world level. Quit bitching about about a little wind, rain, or allergens in the air. It's mid spring in Oregon, what did you expect? It's unfortunate that you're not going to have 2000 people lining the infield like it's a track workout at Nike, I'm sure you can manage. Go to Stanford, have your rabbits take you through 4 miles on pace, and then go to work. Don't worry, if you break the record in Palo Alto I am sure there will be some sort of parade upon your return. You'll get the recognition and attention you and your coach so desperately crave.

My god, go f***ing run at Stanford. It's May 1st on Saturday, you can go break the record in Europe if you don't get it then. But at least you can race a good field in an actual race rather than some stupid ass contrived event.

Also, allergens? How big a pussy are so many of our good runners? Geb whines about allergies, how the f*** can you call yourself an elite athlete when the same thing that messes with pimply faced high schoolers can affect your race? Pathetic.

So they want to setup a special race with UO runners and local pros? If Rupp runs an AR he will probably almost lap the #2 guy twice. Is he really fit enough to do that on his own? That would have to be worth a 26:45-26:50 in Europe. I don't think he's got that kind of juice so I'm predicting he runs like 27:45 if they do the special race with no real competition.

The kid has spent most of his life between Eugene and Portland...and Salazar is b*tching about pollen in Palo Alto, California? There aren't enough trees here for that. Wasn't the biggest complaint about having the '08 trials in Eugene the high pollen count? C'mon Alberto...

If running the 400-oxendrag were an event, you can bet 47 would be the record; those things are HUGE

I would bet that it will be dead calm in Palo Alto tomorrow night. Sure, the forecast says gusts to 20 mph tomorrow night but once the sun goes down I think the wind will die.

Exactly, we should all be so lucky to have so experienced and as accomplished an individual as Alberto Salazar caring to be this detail oriented over our careers.

I think Salazar over-analyzes things, but we'll see how it works out. The Register Guard also reports that Salazar thinks Rupp needs another day as they just got back from Albuquerque. http://www2.registerguard.com/cms/index.php/track-and-field/comments/will-rupp-run-the-10000-at-oregon-relays/

Why is he b*tching about pollen levels in Palo Alto? Runners always complain about it in Eugene, isn't it worse there?

Eugene weather forecast, 44 deg low, 5-10 mph...it would be 50 at race time probably and wind will be minimal due to the stadium. Wow, I would like to see Salazar coach a college team on the east coast where wind in april is considered calm at 15 mph.

Salazar was never a pussy like this. He's making Rupp look like a f@cking Diva. Great, he runs 27:10 for the AR, maybe you can make it into a fast heat in Europe.

Just go WIN at Stanford. As people have posted above, you can get the record in Europe this summer. If you sit on Nelson or Farah and kick, you'll still be close to the record. No one likes a candy ass, even if they are capable of AR's. Webb's mile record would have been so much better at a golden league meet than some lame belgian high school meet. Don't be that guy
