I am 5' 9" and was about 200 pounds 3 months ago. I am now about 168, after quitting drinking, cooking all my own food, and running regularly. At your weight I wouldn't even think of running at this point; start out with stationary bike and walking, then maybe throw in a 5-10 minute run once a week just to see how your knees and joints feel. I lost the thirty pounds by running 15-30 minutes a day and eating really well, as well as doing a light lifting program. When I was a D1 runner I weighed about 145 so I was never a super skinny type. Good luck. |

Are you new to letsrun? I was 5'8" 140-145 in college and my nickname was fatass. 5'9" 145-150 is about as heavy as you can get unless you are purely an 800 guy or just super talented. |

Dude, I'm 5'11" and a "big boned" (fat ass) at 150. Most of the guys my height that I run against are a good 10+ lbs lighter. |

My senior year of college, I was 5'10" and 167 pretty much the whole year. Very little variation on that weight - mornings, after peeing, before eating. I remember seeing a picture of our team at the starting line of the conference xc race. The sun was from the back so mostly we were silhouettes. A team mate handed me the picture - his mom took it - and I remember thinking "damn who is THAT? He's huge!" It was me. I always thought of myself as skinny, and compared to the rest of the population and other types of athletes I was skinny. But standing on that line with my 6 team mates surrounding me, I looked like a roided out bodybuilder in comparison. No wonder I sucked at anything over 1500m. hahahahaha |

I was a decent D1 runner at 145 and 5'9" but like I said I was not the traditional runner body type. I was always a bit more muscular...I benched over 200 my sophomore year of high school and just never had the real super skinny distance runner build. I am near 170 right now but am looking more towards 150 now. I ran 9:27 for 3200 at 155, and then dropped ten pounds when I went to college (Ivy League XC and Steeple). Just take things VERY gradual if you are trying to lose weight. You should be able to drop 15 lbs. through dieting alone OP. |

5'11 157.0 pounds as of this morning I have kind of a large upper body for a runner, but was once 140 pounds at this height. I had also just turned 17... Even in college when I was 150lbs and cut (after working down from 160), I was probably in the top 25% of the BMI range for my team. We had several guys who were 5'9 and 120lbs or 5'11 and 135. I'm trying to get down to 145 ultimately, but things get really tough about the time I get to 152. To you guys who're over 200lbs, I wouldn't worry too much about running. Just try and be more active and lay off the fastfood and sweets. You'll lose 2 pounds a week easy for at least the first month. |
