I saw the name Cierpinski in the Berlin results and wondered if he was related to Waldemar Cierpinski of Olympic marathoning fame. Did a quick google search and found that, indeed, Falk is Waldemar's son. Falk was 9th today, running 2:13. Can anyone name a better father / son marathoning duo? |

No, but within the next decade, I'm sure one of the 1990s Kenyan or Ethiopian marathoners will have a son run an incredible time. I think the best the U.S. has is two generations of a family going sub 4:00 in the mile. Further down the road, since both Ryan Hall and Dathan Ritzenhein married highly talented distance runners, there is the possibility of next generation being exceptional. On a related thought, I've long been surprised that none of the great NBA big men have had a son who became a great NBA big man. You would have thought that Chamberlain, Russell, Thurmond, Jabbar, Ewing, Olajawon, etc. would have had a son or two, or more in that group that would have been great NBA big men. There wasn't a single one. The great big men of the next generation (O'Neal, Howard, Yao, Oden, etc.) are smaller people's children. |

It's always pretty unlikely that a kid will be 7', even if his dad is. The odds are strongly against any of these guys having a huge son. |

i think scientific studies show that when both parents are outstanding athletes, it's less likely their kid will be exceptional. When one parent is a great athlete and the other isn't, there is a higher correlation to having a kid who excels. |

And all four of Bill Walton's sons played college basketball (@ Arizona, LSU, Princeton, San Diego State), with Luke going on to play professionally. |

Interestingly, lots of baseball offspring - Gary Matthews & Ken Griffey Jrs., the Alomars, Boones - probably a lot more out there. Perhaps b/c baseball is more skill-oriented than hoops (not that you don't need skill for basketball) but you can excel as baseball with a much broader range of body type than basketball. |

Thats pretty harsh - with no evidence whatsoever to suggest he was doped. Guilt by virtue of country represented...get a life yanks ! to quote wikipedia: "However, it should be noted that Cierpinski never failed a drugs test during his competitive career (as did most East German athletes later known to have doped) ..." |

At least two of Rick Barry's kids were in the NBA. And Kobe Bryant is the son of former NBA player Joe Bryant. Through they played different sports, the NFL's Calvin Hill and his NBA son Grant Hill were both great pro athletes. The boxer Ken Norton had a son, Ken Jr., who was an NFL linebacker. |

Wrong; documents were found after the fall of the wall, by a German doctor, documenting that Cierpinksi used steroids, and even named the type of steroids. Marion Jones never failed a drug test either. |

Get really real - can you document that? Do a little research and post it here so that we know you are not one of the fools who arbitrarily get their jollies by posting pulled out of the air crap. I believe too many touch themselves while posting stuff like that. It should not be hard to document what your wrote. Thanks. |

It's common knowledge you stupid f*** that Cierpenski was the first steroid aided runner. Get off your lazy ass and look for yourslef ya f***ing slug. |

Thank you. Indeed. It is out there, and yeah, I could document it, it is public and published knowledge, and poster should not be so lazy as to not do a round of googling to find it. Frank Shorter, an attorney, has even been quoted when the news broke. Cierpinksi was and is a cheat, and should be stripped of his medals. |

Common knowledge by whom? Americans? Frank Shorter? - now there is a liar if ever there was one. Americans have to be the most gullible people on the planet. Frank had an axe to grind, in fact he was so arrogant he didn't he even know who the guy was who was running away from him in 1976 - anyone else who knew anything about the sport did - in fact I would believe it more likely that Shorter was on PED's. You Yanks have to stop living in your own little fantasy world believing the crap that is spewed out from your own corrupt media - you don't own truth, your just better at distorting it than most (money buys deception). |

I'm with you all the way until your comment about Shorter being more likely to be on PEDS than Cierpinski was. Despite the accounts and claims that Cierpinski was dirty I have never seen anything that substantiates it. People will post that his name was on the list of doped East Germans but they never show the actual name on the actual list. I also have read quotes from Shorter in which he claims to have seen Cierpinski's name on such a list and I think, though am not sure, that he once claimed to have such a list in a safe deposit box. If true I cannot understand why he doesn't make the list public and until he does I'll doubt its existence. But none of this suggests that Frank ever took PEDs and its as unfair of you to make such an insinuation toward him as it is for others to make that sort of claim about Cierpinski. |
