how is there no reaction time? you wait for the guy ahead you to touch the wall. when you see him hit the wall, you react and then jump. if you react slowly, then you don't start right away. you are assuming an instantaneous reaction, which is not correct. |

But, unlike a track relay, the athletes have to swim 100m. You can still time from the first movement from the board. And since Phelps effort was first, with the "gun" his A.R. is actually legit. |

cheech, you dont wait for him to touch the wall then jump... you time the dive so that while you are fulling extended (mid-dive) your tippy toes are still barely on the blocks as your teammate touches the wall. |

However, the swimmer that is entering the water must still be touching the block (with their feet) until the other swimmer touches the wall. Thus, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th swimmers get a 'moving start' to their relay legs. This is why you see faster split times (in general) for swimmers that are not starting the relay off. |

No, you just can't *leave the block* before the touch. Watch the other relays: they're moving before the incoming swimmer touches. |

Am I the only one wishing that the 4x1 Jamaican anchor (Powell?) talks crap before the final, and then gets run down. |
