High School 4x800m Boys record given a scare today 5/24/2008 4:38PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
At the PA state meet today, North Penn came within two seconds, great race to watch! 7:38.79 officially.

I have a video of it.. but would anybody really be interested in it if it didn't break the record?

That is not 2 seconds off the record it is 6 seconds off the record. Auburn Wshington with Lukesic anchoring.

The record is 7:32.89. So no, they were not all that close. Still a great run.

Well, the information in the link is apparently wrong then, sorry about that. When was the 7:32 run?

Anyone who follows the sport knows that the NFHS records are mostly bogus. The "true" record is 7:32 in 2002. North Penn's run was great, but doesn't even put them in the top 10 fastest HS times every.

I'm certain you meant to say 'ever' instead of 'every'. Simple mistake. Carry on.

This thread brings back memories of another fast HS race
7:35.6 4x880yds (converts to 7:32.96 meters). 42 years ago June 7th 1966 St Johns Univ, Coaches Relays meet Jackson and Boys HS both credited with = time Jimmy Jacksons 1:50.6yd misses by a hair as Mark Ferrells 1:51.3yd anchor is enough to give Jackson the win.

Fast day indeed, an Otis Hill anchored White Plains HS team went 1:25.4 2x220yds(1:24.90m) with future Olympic Gold and Silver medalist and 400m World Record Holder Larry James running 2nd leg(21.5)

Thanks for posting some of the details of that race. Was the race run on cinders? If so, the times in the last 10 years probably don't compare. I'll bet synthetic surfaces help by a second a leg.

We can find out. Email at the address above and I can tell you how to upload it to our www.blip.tv account. It's the host most websites use for videos (flotrack, kimbia, etc). It's free to sign up but I've got no problem putting it on our account.

We need to make it so people can upload quality stuff automatically but haven't gotten around to it.

Mark Bloom http://theharrier.com/marcbloomrunning/booklets/nyclassics.php
wrote a great account of that race. St Johns installed an All-Weather rubberized asphalt surface at some point I want to say before this meet but my memory is fuzzy.
cinders,- the lane one (often 2 also) being chewed up badly as the meet progressed added to the slower/less rebound of cinders.

Jackson-Julio Meade 1:54.3,Bill Jacobs-1:57.3,Sam Thomas 1:52.7 Mark Ferrell 1:51.3
Boys-Mark Edmead 1:54.3,John Henry 1:56.6,Mike Randall 1:53.1, Jimmy Jackson 1:50.6
Jimmy returned and has been the coach at (now called) Boys&Girls HS for many years.

is it just me or do those splits not add up to the same? In fact, if Boys is the losing school, they actually won by a full second with those splits... my guess is the John Henry split is a second too fast...

The race was on cinders. One of the things that made the race so special was that Andrew Jackson and Boys High (simply "the High") were long time PSAL rivals, especially in the shorter relay races--4x220 and 4x440. Each school had its own chant while a race was going on ("Boys High mambo, olay olay"; and ""High's on a heat wave, swoop swoop"). It sounds a bit corny now, but in person, at that time, it was electrifying. Also, at least among track fans who were outsiders to those schools, it was never "Jimmy," it was only "JimmyJack" (as if it were a single word).

What is more impressive about North Penn is not just the 7:38 they ran yesterday but the fact that they are extremely good every year. For those not familiar with their program, here is what they have run in the last 10 years:
2008-7:38.79
2007-7:43.22
2006-7:43.90
2005-7:41.04
2004-7:48.42
2003-7:48.77
2002-7:45.47
2001-7:50.21
2000-7:46.04
1999-7:50.76
If any other high school can come close to that kind of record, I'd love to hear about them. For most schools, 7:50 would be an amazing year--for North Penn, that is the slowest they have run in the past 10. I don't think they ever run at HS nationals so they don't get the recognition they deserve.
