Week before the race: Tuesday: some workout

Wednesday thru Friday: easy/moderate

Saturday: 800, 2x400

Sunday: hill repeats , 10x2 minute

Monday: 2x5miles at 5:20 pace

Tuesday: 8x400 in sub 60 w/min rest

Wednesday: tempo at 5:45 pace

Thursday: 10 200s or so going 28--->25

Friday: 2 runs of 15-20 minutes

Saturday: 3:56.0 Mile

Very interesting. It looks like a lot of work the week of the race, but I take it that he has tried to rest the week of the race and found that he had dead legs.
The whole story speaks to a simple truth- if something isn't working, try something else. And if you are going to simulate someone else's program, El G and Coe are pretty good models!

This is way late but Steve Sherer is a very cool guy. Not a jerk whatsoever and yes that was the Sherer Taper before he ran the 3:56.00 indoors at Dempsey in Washington. "lloyd" have faith in people and be more careful of what you put in print when you do not know the person first hand.

since he's not swatting flies with a sledgehammer, the taper is not really necessary. like Lagat says, training more like a HS runner, with no pointless volume.
