Im sure there are some old guys who would argue that there are some other good candidates for that title.

Such as?

Not disagreeing, just curious to hear what other 'collections' are comparable?

I think that 1-10, you probably have guys capable of running 2:11-2:12 on a flat fast course. I don't know if you can say that about any previous american marathon race.

1984 definitely had better depth.

I would definitely say this marathon has the best top 5 10k to half-marathon runners

1984

56 men under 2:20 - in one race. Even if they held the trials in perfect weather on the Chicago course, you would not see the top 25 under 2:20 today.

1) Tony Sandoval (NM) 2:10:19 Trials Rec

You meant to list 84 runners but you listed the results from 1980 not the runners from 84,

Tuttle, Pfitz, Al Sal

You are kidding yourself if you don't think the top 25 wouldn't go under 2:20 in ideal conditions on a course like Chicago.

They've said the best talent "up front" Like 8-10 runners. Look at the PR's of those top 10 compared to the PR's of the top 10 of 1984. A guy with a PR of 2:10 or better will not make the team. You can't say that about any other year.

depth certainly; top end talent, though, it's probably open to debate which is better. honestly, from the fan's perspective, whether the 22nd guy runs 2:17 or 2:19 is sort of irrelevant.

Last year 20 American men ran under 2:20 at the Chicago Marathon in less than perfect weather. The Trials will have a much deeper field, so you claim doesn't really hold up.

that's a pretty ridiculous statement. in 04, 22 guys were under 2:20. i think another 3 could be conjured up pretty easily.

Keep in mind, this being 1980, that Bill Rodgers, and however many others, did not run because they knew we were going to boycott. But it will be interesting to see, come Trials day, how fast the 30th place finisher is.I'd guess 2:18ish.

i'll start with any of the 60 or so who have done it already. and, yes, it's not 04. when about 40 or so had done the same. facts are good, aren't they?

Shoot. I've already changed my mind. I'm gonna guess 2:18 will get you +/- 20th place, and 2:22 will get you around 30th. I'm now thinking that a lot of guys ran the race of their lives just to qualify, and asking all those guys to beat their best again all on the same day, is hoping for a lot.

Compare the real athletes:

Khalid Khannouchi 2:07:04
Ryan Hall 2:08:24
Abdi Abdirahman 2:08:56
Meb Keflezighi 2:09:56
Brian Sell 2:10:47
Alan Culpepper 2:11:02
Peter Gilmore 2:12:45
Mbarak Hussein 2:12:53
Dathan Ritzenhein 2:14:01
Simon Sawe 2:14:09
Clint Verran 2:14:12

Who cares how many 2:20 wannabes? Compare the top 5. And the top 3? Forget it.

You're comparing the race results of a single race to the PR's of entrants in another, don't be ridiculous. If you wanted to compare the PR's of entrants in both races, Dick Beardsley, for example, would be a little higher up the list...

How about every Hanson runner, current and past who are in these trials. That would be at least 22 who would.

Don't kid yourself.
