He pretty much measures his own noose, slips it around his neck, and hangs himself in this laughable piece:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=A1YourView&xml=/sport/2007/10/16/sojohn116.xml

"I know that a small group of people doubted I could do what I did without taking drugs and that's not because of any allegations or investigations, but because my performances were that good."

A _small_ group, Michael???

"The fact that I was tested more than 100 times during my career and never tested positive should support the fact that I achieved my success clean."

Right. Right. Like BALCO never happened. Like you can test for HGH or insulin. Or test+epitest. Or they had a test for EPO while you were around, nevermind tested sprinters for EPO.

"I have never felt the need to defend myself in the past when our sport has come under attack and people have said that the majority of athletes are doping."

So, um--why are you "defending" yourself?

"it saddens and disappoints me greatly that I now have to feel defensive about my performances, even though no one has ever accused me."

Fascinating piece of illogic there, Michael.

"I actually still believe that most of the athletes are in fact clean."

Does the IAAF take away your Scooby Snacks if you admit the truth, Michael?

When he was inducted into the T&F Hall of Fame I was inducted at the same time. After giving my speech I was escorted upstairs to a room where Michael Johnson was sitting, having already finished his induction speech. As I approached him I noticed a small smudge of chocolate at the side of his mouth. There was a box of chocolates on the table and it was obvious to me that he had eaten a chocolate and a smudge was still on his mouth. THAT is about as unclean as Michael Johnson ever got.
He had a great coach and worked very hard to honor that coach by winning two impossible events. He was clean.

Myself, on the other hand, sit with my head in my hands weeping over and over again, WHY WHY. There were drugs that would have caused my squeeky voice to become lower and I didn't even know they were there. Why was I so left out? I will have this high squeeky voice forever.

Gerry, there are all kinds of drugs that could probably help you. Still.

Yeah, his logic in that piece was pretty flawed. He started off by saying that the tests are unreliable and don't catch everyone, but then tries to exonerate himself by saying that he never tested positive.

I saw pictures of him recently. It's like Barry Bonds in reverse.

This is a natural physique?

Looks a good deal more doped than:

(Ben started using in 1982, so he had been doping for four years by the time this pic was taken)

What an impressive and comprehensive bit of PED research you've done there. How can anyone question it?

I've no more idea than you whether or not he doped, but your reading of the piece is frankly rather disingenuous.

Outside of this board, which is hardly representative, I would say yes, compared to other athletes at his level. Without any basis of the accusations beyond his performance though, does it really matter how many?

This is pretty much what he says too, so not sure what your point is.

This is the point of the article, please try to understand it.

Admittedly this is poorly written. I guess he meant that no one with any authority had accused him.

You've not really added much to the debate here have you?

Gerry Lindgren, I hope. One of the earliest and best. I come from your era. Michael Johnson, like Edwin Moses, and yourself, are three of the greatest, cleanest, and above all, believers in the you can't fool yourself theory. If I ran 14.6, I put down 14.6, not 15. Gerry live long and prosper.

The strong anti-drug stance nowdays appears more likley to be someone deflecting attention away from themselves than actually endorsing the anti-drug view. e.g. Marion Jones - "I would never use performance enhancing drugs."

The fact that Marion Jones never failed a drugs test during the age where it was perceived from the general public point of view that drugs cheats would be eventually be caught has been completely destroyed. Any credibilty they once enjoyed has evaporated despite testing improving significantly.

The only question which now remains is "How many top performers were on drugs but never tested positive?". Were only the really stupid ones ever caught?

Australia has one of the most advanced sports institutes in the world and they were unable to catch drug cheats like Jones at their own Olympics. What chance does an athletics federation in Kenya stand?

I don't know why people insist on continually debating whether retired athletes were doped. It's pointless. It's like debating the existence of God, or who killed Kennedy. You're never going to prove anything conclusively either way beyond a reasonable doubt, so why waste your time. It all just comes down to what you believe.

Oh no. You are too modest. It isn't SVC setting us all straight, it's you, EWF. It's YOU. Giving us the real life lesson on character.

You can't buy stuff like this folks. Priceless lessons. Simply priceless.

So retroactive speculation based on pictorial evidence and the parsing of someone's words from an interview = character? Funny, I thought character encompasses not only what you do when no one is looking, but also how you treat other people. Accusing someone of being a drug cheat without evidence doesn't sound like something a someone of quality character would do. But, hey, maybe that's just me.

Oh, great, now you've sucked me back into the debate. Bastard.
