Hey folks, Got to the bottom of it myself. I asked the race director of the 10k why no love for Deena and he forward the same response he gave to someone else affiliated with Deena: Thanks for your e-mail...I have talked with her husband and all iscool...when she sent the information to me it was one of 72 comp requests I received that week...I agree with you I did not catch her name and she did not bring any attention to herself in the e-mail about who she was....her agent is in Japan and was to do it but Deena and her husband were trying to do it. Phil please know I understand your comments all too well...before being responsible to 400 employees running this community bank I was a TV sportscaster for 22 years...I understand professional athletes well. Andrew told me he was sorry for not making more of a point about Deena. I wish to God I knew every runner but I do not. They are good [people who do not like to bring attention to themselves. The 10K race is just one of 9 we put on on this day and to error is human..which I am..some days more errors than others. Our event has hit to the highest levels we've wanted to see on a national scale...each year we always turn out the USATF athlete of the week..thanks to the masters...when we had the california 10K championship for 3 years we brought in some of the best international runners...we had guys running 27 minute 10K's which put us on the map along with a masters runner running 29...Our goal is to be a large representation for our central coast community. All i can do is try and then be truthful to people when I make a mistake....please know we get about 6,000 people involved on this race day...huge for our community...and the behind the scenes people are pretty much two people...myself and my assistant who do this on top of our bank jobs and my other Tv job I do at night. I guess all these sleepless nights have caught up with me and I picked a bad time to make a mistake with one of our nations premier runners. Thank you again for your e-mail. This thread will only get about 10 responses because it's not as fun. Still doesn't sounds like he offered a comp. |

Kinda says something that the RD of a fairly well known races has never heard of Deena Kastor. |

Mitch is a class act. How did Deena respond to this? She crossed him off publicly in her blog. |

She removed it from her blog which acknoledges that she made a mistake as well. |

"Deena and her husband were trying to do it." Do what exactly? Pick up a phone or send an email regarding her entry into a race? And they couldn't do it in a way that let the director know who she was? How can someone get so dependent on the "services of an agent" that they can't even do the simplest thing correctly? How hard is it really? |

Her criticism was subtly implied. It would have been different if she'd totally gone off about him. All that the sentence did was hint that she had been offended. Pretty harmless, really. |

Exactly. She has Ray Flynn for an agent, who is known to be a little bit shady. Why did she choose to go behind the back of her agent? Because she already knew the race wasn't the kind that needed her, so she and her husband tried to finagle a free weekend out of it. In itself there's nothing wrong with the effort, it was the manner in which she handled herself after the RD turned her down which is the scandal. |

So what it comes down to is that the RD doesn't known the name of on of the top profile athletes in his sport, unless somebody basically draws him a picture about who she is. Doesn't that make you want to run right over there and give the guy an entry fee? |

So you think she should have let the director know who she was? I think it says more about Deena that she didn't go out of her way to flaunt her credentials. And I think that it should be safe to assume the a RD would know who Deena was. But He acknowledged his mistake, though I wouldn't automatically say he made a mistake. It was minor incident that was blown up but a bunch uninformed posters on Letsrun who wanted to do what they do best, post BS. Kinda like what you just done. |

Well it didn't take long for some joker to chime in with the next criticism. Actually it says nothing whatsoever except in your head. |

Yep here is the picture that needed to be drawn: Can I have a free entry? Thank You, Deena Kastor 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist |

I just went back and read a few pages of the original post after reading this and all I can say is "Wow!" I mean I've read some crazy sh!t on this message board over the years but this one takes the cake. How out of touch can Malmo, MAYERHOFF, Rippy cripply, et. al., be? If a runner with the accomplishments and professional demeanor of Deena wants to be in your race you should be falling all over yourself to make sure she doesn't lift a finger to get there and compete. Deena is the real deal. Her presence would not only ensure that the charity and race will be materially better off by her prescense but it would also create enough buzz to help the charity and race years down the road. Most of the negative responses by letsrunners seem to be wholely ignorant of basic economics. Pay a little get a whole lot. This is clearly only the fault of the RD. Maybe he wouldn't have made such a bad mistake if he wasn't overloaded with all his other duties. Or maybe he was so stuck on his community concept that he lost sight of what was best for the race and the charity. Man, if I made such a boneheaded move in my job my Board would have the right to fire me. I've disagreed in the past with the aforementioned letsrunners but was always entertained or learned something in the process. But this time their responses make me wonder if they're still living in 1980 and have become totally obsolete. |

The RD was familiar with Deena Drossin. He's never heard of Deena Kastor. |

I had generally gotten the idea that Malmo was a person who commanded respect on these boards, but after his performance in the other Deena thread, I have to wonder why. Yeah, I know he was fast once. |

Don't give the RD a hard time because he doesn't recognize the name Deena Kastor. Most men don't really pay attention to women's running unless they're looking for eye candy. |

Your opinion is obsolete Jefe. Deena wanted something for nothing. When she didn't get her way, like Mary Slaney before her, she chose to create a public spectacle. All over a measly twenty-five dollars. |

She is not entitled to anything. There are many on these boards that are happy it happened. Poor Deena, doesnt get her rear end kissed and her request for a free room, travel expense, and free entry. Rather than pay like the others, she acts like a baby and decides not to play. If she wanted a big payday, go enter a big race in Europe- |
