+1.7 wind and as far as I know, the time is now official, so there won't be any adjusting by hundredths due to the eye-beam. Rieti has long been known as a place to run some very fast multi-lap races (leading to speculation that the track wasn't a full 400m long), but this is one of the first times I can remember an amazing sprint time being run on that track. |

The meeting record up until today was 9.99 from Jon Drummond in 1994. I think that it's been windy there all day. We'll see how this holds up. It's just very odd that we'd see a WR on a track that doesn't have a reputation for being a great 100m track, and in a semifinal round. |

He just needs to get a 1.7 at his back instead of the 0.5 in his face as he's had for much of the year. There was talk of these two meeting in Brussels. We'll see if it comes to pass. |

Gay has two marks better than the four WRs that Powell has made. In fact, Powell does not have any of the top five marks, which are split between Greene (3) and Gay. Adjusted for altitude and wind, this mark is about 9.85 'basic'. |

I'll be impressed by Powell when he beats Tyson Gay, not when he runs 9.74 in the thin air of Rieti. Well OF COURSE I'm impressed by that, too, but I'm more impressed by Tyson, and the ease with which he dispatched Powell in Osaka. |

This is impressive. But why has he been world class since 2003 and in that time has collected just one bronze medal as an indivisual at global championships? He better beat Gay in Bejieng. This just puts more pressure on him and will make it more difficult for him next year. |

Next year's 100 at Beijing is going to be sick. I'm not surprised at all about Powell, he's obviously damn good. This does make his performance at worlds pretty surprising, but whatever, I guess he's just a choker. Better work on that before next year, Asafa! It is amazing how dominant Greene was. He has to be the best 100 guy of all time. Completely dominant in both times and championships, and his times still hold up extremely well (obviously it hasn't been that long, but still). It's interesting how the times in the sprints kind of levelled off in the 80's. Think about it, Carl Lewis was pretty much just as fast as Mo Greene. But then, the distance didn't start to level off until like the mid 90's, and you could argue, especially in the 10k, that it hasn't stopped yet. |
