Had not heard that.... checked their website just this morning and it said they were no longer accepting any additional registrations... whatever that means.

Just checked it again.... 9/8 date is still listed, plus it says over 12,000 people are registered.

I forgot to mention that I live here in Indy... I received an e mail about a week ago from some local sports org. ( don't recall who ) sayong that Indy Classic Marathon was desperate for Volunteers.

The call out for volunteers was also in the Star, maybe last weekend. I was under the impression they had some deal going with the military, and thought perhaps they'd get a lot of volunteers that way.

I think the date they chose was awful, if only because there are several other big events in town that day -- some of which will bring traffic to areas near their course (Penrod arts fair), and it's likely to be damn hot.

Did I read somewhere that the regular Indianapolis Marathon in October has seen a higher than normal signup rate? Those guys put on a quality event, and the timing is certainly better.

A permit was taken out showing a request to run the race on NOVEMBER 3, 2007.

Here is a link to the permit: http://www2.indygov.org/SEPERMITprod/servlet/FullFinal?typdex=!NOO!8306!vas!!!!

The City of Indy's website does NOT show any permit for a run on September 8, 2007.

See: http://www2.indygov.org/SEPERMITprod/servlet/VAS Scroll down to September 8, then continue on to November and you will see the application for the November 3, 2007 day, "in process."

The Marathon's website still shows a marathon date of SEPT 8, 2007. http://www.indyclassicmarathon.com/

Something smells bad in Indy.

Here is a link to the 300 post thread on the Indy Marathon in which wejo posted to say that of the posts, 77 came from the same computer with many different screen names.

http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=1664985&page=15

It looks like the people concerned in that thread had every right to be.

They did originally have a permit for the 9/8 date, because I remember looking at it to see who had requested it. I wonder when the change was made?

And do they really have over 11,000 registrants or is that a bogus # ? And if it is legit., and they now change the race date at the last minute, there are going to be a lot of P.O.'ed registrants. A nd how many of them will demand their money back... and will it be given to them ?!

A snafu with over 12000 runners being told to come back in 2 months.

I do ONE marathon a year and work my miles up for it. It would be very hard for me to be set to peak for a Sept 8 race, only to be told, come back in November.

The date moved 1 time before as I recall and so this would be the second time.

Does anyone else recall that?

Oh the hits keep coming, the date has changed, and Nov 3rd is the new projected date.

From what I hear, they did in fact have around 12k registered. Good luck! Lots of infighting within the staff, lots of outside muscle (NFL?) causing the city to refuse to allow the original date. The original race committee was/is filled with complete morons with big grandiose plans. Who knows if it will ever really happen.

i am associated with one of the running stores in town and therefore talk to people all day who are training for various fall races. i have met very few who are signed up for that marathon. If in fact they have 12000 signed up for the event we are seeing hardly any walk into the store, actually ive talked to many more people who are doing the old indy marathon which routinely only attracts a couple thousand or less. Not saying that the race directors are lying but i think people within the indy running community are skeptical to say the least about the figures being stated.

I'm disappointed to announce that I didn’t read the prior thread until now. Why haven’t the organizers involved with the Indianapolis Classic Marathon been arrested? That’s a dream story for the local press. Reading that post was like watching the elephant man do the electric slide. I'm amazed and very sad at the same time.

This whole thing reminds of the Lqakeshore Marathon debacles in chicago a few years ago.

Yes...it's in that long 300 post thread. I think the original date was to be 10/6.

I bet the 12,000 number is the total when you combine the 5k marathon, the 13.1 marathon and the 26.2 marathon they were going to run that day.

There shouldn't have been any conflict with the NFL - the Colts open up their regular season with a Thursday night game against the Saints on 9/6 - the race was to be on 9/8. Actually, it couldn't have worked out any better for them that way - if there would have been a game on 9/8, it could potentially have caused some issues...

Wejo needs to unlock that other thread and roll these posts into it. That was too entertaining....

Oh, I also forgot about the Nordic Pole Walking event that was added as well:

http://www.indyclassicmarathon.com/beginnersnordicwalk.html

Probably good for at least a couple thousand entrants...
