Tomorrow night in Bloomington , on the campus of IU , an assault is about occur. Matt drives strongly through the finish to run 3:59.5 -- only to be caught by Jim " Runaway freight train" Sorensen at the wire. We just have to hope that the weather cooperates , and having to max out after having solo-ed a 4:13 just 3 days ago. Jim and Matt - we're pulling for you !!!!

What time did Coughlan run when he was Sub4 over 40? Was it indoor or outdoor?

Jim looked pretty comfy at Indy. Look for a blazing last lap from these two, but hopefully they won't wait too late....

From what I've read , Jim would like to go through the half in 2:00 to 2:01. He and Matt will need cover - the ZAP athletes are fit and coming off strong preps for this. I'd love to see one of the networks step in , but that isn't likely to happen. Godspeed to them both in this magical quest.

Will they have pacers? I am thinking they will have a hard time doing it unless they are chasing someone.

Nice that this seems low key and not some overblown dyestat hoo ha with Marc Davis bloviating all over the meet.

Dan Wilson helped Centrowitz with pacing at the New York Reebok meet, so Wilson may be doing the same thing tonight.

Didn't Centrowitz graduate already (I mean most high schools don't have class all the way up until the end of June)? So he's not in high school any more? So he had his time to run under 4:00, but it's over now. Oh well.

i agree...isn't that how caitlin chock set the girls high school 5k record a few years back? She did it some time over the summer after graduating? So if someone doesn't continue on to college or pro-levels, when are they officially not in high school anymore?

You get the summer after to still set HS records. Jim Ryun's old mile record (that Alan Webb broke) was set in the summer after graduation, too.

Sorensen ran 1.05-2.10-3.15-4.13... alone. Hardly "pressing" himself or taxing himself, either.

No fair bringing these FACTS into the discussion.

The Letsrun posters have already declared it's too late in the season, so even if Centrowitz does break 4, it won't count for HS. Nevermind that it's not even July, it's too late. Besides the majority of posters close their workouts in a sub 4 and they don't get all this media attention.

Is he really credited with a sub-4 "high school" effort if it's almost July? I think he'll come up short, anyway, but I think it should happen within the context of a high school race. Like NON at the latest.

You can read Jim's interview on Masterstrack. It may prove to be a great prep race for tonight. He does say that an 800 this Saturday will be his last race of the season. If you're a thoroughbred ( which he obviously is ), a "tightening" workout a few days before the big race can work wonders. Many of us "mortals" would prefer a few more days recovery.
As a Marylander , we're very proud of Matt. He has a bright future as an Oregon Duck. Go for it , young champion !!
We are experiencing a golden moment in track and field.
Happy trails !

You don't get the summer before entering high school to set records so why should you get the summer after? OH because it makes 4 years total.
