As a parent, I would be 100% against my 5 y.o. riding a motorcycle. And culturally, I realize this is no problemo in some parts, but it is sad that these kids aren't doing real cross country running instead.

I just couldn't let it go. This is a child. Dead. Take a second and think about that (if that is possible for a self-absorbed shit head like yourself). Now hope that karma doesn't f*** you up too badly. And just for fun - it is "riddance". If you are mocking those with mullets because you feel superior to them - think again. |

That sucks, unfortunatley with any type of motorsport you just cannot be 100% sure of being safe at all times. I think 5 year olds are capable of riding those little displacement bikes but as this proves freak accidents do occur. |

As a parent, I am 100% in favor of my 5 y.o. riding a motorcycle. It is sad that a terrible accident happened. But just because motorcycling is beyond your ability to comprehend please don't go judging others for how they live their life. I would be decimated if this happened to my little one but sometimes we've got to live life in spite of our fear of the consequences. Hopefully we mitigate the risks but nothing is 100% safe, not even cross country running. I, and my family will never be like you and yours but that doesn't make me any less loving of my family than you are. We both are living our lives in the way we need to in order to celebrate life. So I'll try not to judge you and maybe, just maybe, you try not to judge me. In the meantime, a fellow parent has just lost his 5 year old boy and I grieve for him and his family. PS-thanks Old and Grouchy |

PS-thanks Old and Grouchy
It does not take a genius to "comprehend" motorcycling. It does not take a genius to look at the number of people seriously hurt motorcycling and comprehend that, perhaps this is not something a 5 year old child should doing. Yes, nothing in life is 100% safe but then again it's not beyond comprehension that there are much, MUCH safer activities than motorcycling. The simplest way to mitigate the risk from it is not to do it. The only thing beyond comprehension is how f***ing brain damaged someone has to be to let a 5 year old child participate in this sport. If your 5 year old ever gets seriously hurt or killed from it, I wonder if you'll come on here and tell us how much you love them but hey, that's the way it goes, right? Nope, you'll probably do what this kid's parents did. Blame it on the course officials for making it "unsafe". All so you can convince yourself you didn't do anything wrong by letting the 5 year old out there in the first place. |

No, you might be devastated but you wouldn't be decimated. . . . By the way, I too would be devastated. How terribly sad for the child's family--and for the 12-year-old who accidentally killed him. What a burden that child has to carry. |

Your ignorance is the only thing holding me back from using asteriks in my reply. You clearly know nothing of the sport, the statistics, inherent dangers, ways to mitigate those dangers, etc., but somehow you are more knowledgeable than I am? I've got quite a bit of knowledge in this regard, sure I'm always learning more but I don't see my position as being brain damaged. I am loath to include motorcycling with other extreme sports but, in many ways, we face the same kind of incredulous reactions from people like you all the time. What you should be saying is that "It is my narrow minded opinion that any parent who lets their 5 year old ride a motorcycle is nuts." And I would reply that you are entitled to your opinion. And if something tragic were to happen to me or my family you have every right to say "See! I told you so!" So you can gleefully rest on your laurels about how safe you and your family are but whether that tragedy comes or not me and my boys are going riding...and I have the feeling that when they grow up they will be much better at being an adult than you are. |

"What you should be saying is that "It is my narrow minded opinion that any parent who lets their 5 year old ride a motorcycle is nuts." It's not being narrow minded, it's about keeping your 5 yr old child safe. At 5, kids are still learning to ride bicycles, they don't have enough experience or coordination to be adequately operating something that is capable of higher speeds. The risk factor is extremely high, but if that's how you and your kids want to live, so be it. Just my opinion though. |

A tragic story indeed. As earlier posters have said, parents can protect their children as best they can for riding bikes at an early age. I worked in motorcycle racing for over 10 years and most of the top pro's started racing at age 4 and 5. Matt Wait, the Bostrom brothers, Roberts family, even Rossi, Kevin Scwantz and Doohan started their top flight racing careers on dirt bikes just like the child above. I know Wait's parents and the Bostrom's protected their children as best they could and let them participate. Go-Kart racing has a very similar age progression path. I must agree that similar ages and bike displacement must be matched to avoid such accidents. |

Please don't take offense to some of the idiotic posters on this forum. Some people are just unhappy and distraught over their own lack of success. If you notice there are some posters who immediately post offensive statements. I try not to even respond to such posts because they are the true trolls. The negative posters are unhappy people and this forum allows them to vent the gutter trash and minds they have. Just think the idiot poster who typed, "good riddance" is actually a part of our society. Scary! |

Riding a low-displacement dirt bike on a closed course, with supervision, with other riders of similar experience on similar sized bikes is far safer than riding a bicycle on public streets where there are curbs, fire hydrants, sewer grates, and oblivious motorists, among other hazards. |

The language belongs to you, too, but most would disagree: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/decimated In any case, it doesn't change what a tragedy this was. |

No, you might be devastated but you wouldn't be decimated.
The original poster could mean that ten percent of him would be very sad if not destroyed. If so, then yes he would be decimated. |

I'm glad you posted your name as, moron, because that's what you are. To all of you runners of the road out there--you have more of a chance of getting hit by a motorized vehicle than this kid did getting killed by another biker. Nothing is completely safe but one does the best they can to minimize the risk of harm. |

While that would be expected, your child would still be hurt or dead and all the "I told you so"s in the world won't change it. Far better for you to not let him get injured in the first place. But clearly your freedom to put him in harms way is more important than the danger to his health.
Let's hope they manage to actually grow up and still possess the capacity to think at that point. A 5 year has barely acquired the ability to control his or her OWN body with any coordination now and you're putting them on heavy machinery that can injure or kill them (and others) and expecting them to control THAT. And for what purpose? Because it's FUN! Pure Genius. |

Only for the parents who let their 5 year olds ride bikes on busy streets unsupervised. No doubt these are the same parents who put them on motorbikes. |

Exactly why I don't let my 5 year going running on city streets or dirt bike racing. They (5 yr olds) are not physically mature enough to adequately pretect themselves if a seriously dangerous situation presents itself. 5 yr olds require closer supervision when dealing with vehicles than can be given from the sidelines or stands. |
