pretty close race, pretty solid times too...the first half of the race is all rolling hills in central park so that is very solid even if the 2nd half of it was relatively flat. looks like meb and abdi are on their way to nice marathons soon--if tergat were there he would have run sub 1 01 i predict |

The weather was not ideal today. Very humid. But the raced did finish up the last 4 miles with a nice tailwind along the Hudson. I'm sure the final splits were pretty fast. Meanwhile, no American women in the elites: http://www.nyrr.org/nychalf/bios.php |

there are no elite american women marathoners except for deena drossin. the only other worth talking over is jen rhines, and she was in europe and ran 14 55 for 5k and also ran a big PR in 10k earlier this season. shell be due for a big marathon as well soon. |

I think you guys are underestimating here. Meb and Abdi ran awesome. 61 minutes is tremendous. |

61:30s is not tremendous for sub 27:23 10k runners, Ramaala has broken 60 and his 10k PB is 27:29. |

on that course it is. |

Yea...I think they ran really well. Impressive in my book. |

I noticed a decent headwind coming down the West Side, but that may have been due to the rain that started when I was at mile 10 (leaders had just finished). Not sure if a shift occured or not. |

Why "that" course? It looks like an ideal course to me, the first 6 miles is the same loop that they run screaming fast 8ks on, 5.75 to 10 miles is downhill, 9 to 13 miles there's a tailwind. That's a dream course. |

Times for Culpepper and Gilmore? |

it's not even close to being as fast as the pancake track-like courses in Milan or Phoenix, etc. |

That's because it's a downhill course. |

Ndereba and Benita Johnson ran virtually together down the final stretch; Catherine just nipped her. The local ABC affiliate, WABC-TV, telecast the entire race and did postrace interviews with Nyariki, Meb, Ndereba, and Benita. Of course, all of this was before 8:30 in the morning on a Sunday, when there was othing ELSE to show, but it was a good package. |

Meg and Abdi move to #3 and #6 on the All-time US lists. Did they get a split at 20k? They would have to be under the AR (although "assisted", more that 30% from start to finish), probably about 58:20. 1:00:55 ( 1) Mark Curp (MO) 05 Jan 1959 15 Sep 1985 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:17 ( 1) Khalid Khannouchi (NY) 22 Dec 1971 17 Sep 2000 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:20.7 ( 3) Khalid Khannouchi- 2 22 Dec 1971 19 Sep 2004 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:28 a ( 2) Mebrahtom Keflezighi (CA) 05 May 1975 27 Aug 2006 New York, NY USA 1:01:30 ( 2) Keith Brantly (FL) 23 May 1962 19 Sep 1993 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:32 ( 1) Paul Cummings (UT) 05 Sep 1953 25 Sep 1983 Dayton OH USA 1:01:34 a ( 3) Abdihakim Abdirahman (AZ) 02 Dec 1978 27 Aug 2006 New York, NY US 1:01:43 ( 2) George Malley (OR) 28 Jul 1955 19 Sep 1982 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:43 ( 1) Mark Curp- 2 05 Jan 1959 14 Sep 1986 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:47 ( 1) Herb Lindsay (MI) 12 Nov 1954 20 Sep 1981 Manchester VT USA 10 1:01:47 ( 4) Bill Reifsnyder (NM) 13 Apr 1962 15 Sep 1985 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:47 ( 5) Jon Sinclair (CO) 04 Sep 1957 15 Sep 1985 Philadelphia PA USA 1:01:52 ( 1) Todd Williams (MI) 07 Mar 1969 07 Dec 1991 Orlando FL USA 1:01:57 ( 2) Bruce Bickford (MA) 12 Mar 1957 14 Sep 1986 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:00 a (18) Bill Reifsnyder- 2 13 Apr 1962 20 Sep 1992 South Shields ENG 1:02:00 ( 1) David Morris (NM) 17 May 1970 14 Mar 1999 Yamaguchi JPN 1:02:06 ( 1) Eric Polonski (TX) 11 Sep 1970 19 Jan 1997 Carlsbad CA USA 1:02:07 ( 1) Martyn Brewer (KY) 07 Oct 1956 20 Sep 1987 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:08 ( 3) Bill Reifsnyder- 3 13 Apr 1962 14 Sep 1986 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:09 ( 2) Steven Spence (PA) 09 May 1962 16 Sep 1990 Philadelphia PA USA 20 1:02:12 ( 2) Mark Curp- 3 05 Jan 1959 20 Sep 1987 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:14 ( 2) Kirk Pfeffer (CO) 30 Jul 1956 20 Sep 1981 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:14 ( 1) Dean Matthews (FL) 19 Apr 1955 16 Sep 1984 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:14 ( 6) Phil Coppess (IA) 02 Sep 1954 15 Sep 1985 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:15 ( 4) William Donakowski (MI) 21 Jun 1956 14 Sep 1986 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:15 ( 1) Khalid Khannouchi- 3 22 Dec 1971 09 Mar 2003 Kyoto JPN 1:02:16 ( 1) Stan Mavis (CO) 26 Feb 1955 27 Jan 1980 New Orleans LA USA 1:02:16 ( 1) Khalid Khannouchi- 4 22 Dec 1971 10 Mar 2002 Kyoto JPN 1:02:19 ( 5) Mark Stickley (VA) 17 Jul 1962 14 Sep 1986 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:22 ( 2) Jon Sinclair- 2 04 Sep 1957 20 Sep 1981 Manchester VT USA 30 1:02:24 ( 2) Mark Curp- 4 05 Jan 1959 20 Mar 1988 New Bedford MA USA 1:02:26 ( 3) Bill Reifsnyder- 4 13 Apr 1962 16 Sep 1984 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:27 ( 1) Alberto Salazar (OR) 07 Aug 1958 06 Nov 1983 Bakersfield CA USA 1:02:29 ( 1) Steve Taylor (VA) 10 Jul 1965 14 Oct 1990 Toronto CAN 1:02:30 (20) Paul aufdemBerge (MI) 30 Dec 1964 03 Oct 1993 Brussels BEL 1:02:31 ( 2) Craig Virgin (IL) 02 Aug 1955 27 Jan 1980 New Orleans LA USA 1:02:32 ( 1) Kirk Pfeffer- 2 30 Jul 1956 07 Dec 1979 Las Vegas NV USA 1:02:32 ( 1) Paul Cummings- 2 05 Sep 1953 15 Mar 1987 New Bedford MA USA 1:02:34 ( 2) Mark Stickley- 2 17 Jul 1962 07 Dec 1985 Orlando FL USA 1:02:36 ( 2) Paul Cummings- 3 05 Sep 1953 16 Mar 1986 New Bedford MA USA 40 1:02:37 ( 3) Mark Curp- 5 05 Jan 1959 05 Dec 1987 Orlando FL USA 1:02:38 ( 5) Mark Curp- 6 05 Jan 1959 16 Sep 1990 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:40 ( 1) Rodney DeHaven (WI) 21 Sep 1966 21 Jan 1996 San Diego CA USA 1:02:42 ( 4) Mark Stickley- 3 17 Jul 1962 20 Sep 1987 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:42 ( 2) Mark Stickley- 4 17 Jul 1962 10 Dec 1988 Orlando FL USA 1:02:46 (30) Dan Held (WI) 15 Oct 1965 24 Sep 1994 Oslo NOR 1:02:50 ( 2) John Wellerding (KY) 17 May 1954 18 Sep 1983 Philadelphia PA USA 1:02:51 ( 1) Ken Misner (FL) 07 Feb 1949 16 Dec 1978 Orlando FL USA 1:02:55 a ( 1) Kirk Pfeffer- 3 30 Jul 1956 22 Aug 1981 San Diego CA USA 1:02:55 ( 3) Mark Curp- 7 05 Jan 1959 25 Sep 1983 Dayton OH USA 50 1:02:56 ( 3) Dave Babiracki (CA) 22 Jul 1957 27 Jan 1980 New Orleans LA USA 1:02:56 ( 1) Ed Eyestone (UT) 15 Jun 1961 20 Sep 1992 Toronto CAN |

Screaming fast 8k course is the other way. This was a nice course and as good as you can hope for when it comes to August weather. Sun baked west side highway could've been tough. I didn't notice the tailwind, but you never notice the wind unless you're fighting it. A lot of people including me had waterlogged sneakers for the 2nd half. |

That's why I noticed it. I wasn't running the race, simply jumped in as part of my long run. When I turned around at mile 10 to head back uptown... BAM! Right in the face. (although it was more of a crosswind off the river, so it did shift I am sure) The heavy rain had stopped by then. |
