      • Okay, so I am wondering, will anyone ever break the five minute barrier in the beer mile? The current record stands at 5:40, but I think Bekele would have a legit shot at breaking the 5 minute barrier. I would also guess that Mottram would be even better than Bekele given his large size and the fact taht he is Australian.

      • Listen people there is only one true beer mile champion (and this assumes the beer, lap, beer, lap, beer, lap, beer, lap mile)

        His name is Scott Mortenson - he went to UCSD and was the brother of Kim Mortenson (UCLA anorexia girl). He ran a timed 5:11 beer mile back in '94 or '95 I believe.

        **I'm not 100% on if it was a cup or a can. If it was from a cup (I'll try to get this verified) then I throw out the time and forget I ever wrote this post.

      • I'm nearly positive this has been done. I have absolutely no proof, but within my high school team there was legend of the 5 minute mile that college runners that my high school coaches ran with would try to acheive. This 5 minute mile was simply a beer mile, and 5 minutes was the goal for them. True or not, I don't really know, but these didn't seem like fabricated stories to tell to innocent high schoolers.

      • If anyone could do it, Bekele certainly wouldn't be the one. He's not even a great miler and is too small. You would need someone big, fast, and from a beer drinking culture. Hmm... I wonder who would fit that bill the best?

        The record is 5:40. There are faster times posted, but they are not official due to not following all the rules/not video taping it. Anything under 7:00 needs video proof.

      • i've run 6:03 on my second attempt (first one was 7:30 or so). with practice i could see myself doing
        1st beer 13s
        next three lap/beer in 70/17 = 87*3 = 4:21
        last lap 65
        total 5:39

        it wouldn't be easy, but it would be possible

        i'm a 4:30 miler, so presumably a 3:50 miler could run 40s faster and go 4:59

        i say it's possible, but not until we start getting elite distance runners tackling the record and trying to one-up each other

      • History's most dominant force in the beer mile was Henry Rono. He could probably do 5k of the beer mile at a sub 5 pace...

      • So what do you think is the best way to train for this...obviously you need to be able to drink and run, so basically get hammered every weekend to build a tolerance?

      • No. It has nothing to do with tolerance, because you don't feel the beer until you're done. It has to do with your ability to chug, your ability to run fast, and having a cast iron stomach that doesn't ever puke and doesn't mind running all out when it's full.

      • Beer-mile specific training is easy. Do regular training for a fast mile with a few alterations.

        1) In the middle of longish runs, stop on a few occasions to chug a can of Pepsi. Then keep running.
        2) In interval workouts, chug a can of Pepsi between every interval.
        3) Before any run or workout, chug multiple cans of Pepsi.
        4) Before you go to bed everynight, chug lots of Pepsi and then do jumping jacks, pushups and situps in that order. Then go to sleep.

        The biggest part of the beer mile is conditioning your body to running with carbonated fluid sloshing around in your stomach.

      • Think about it, how fast can you chug a can of beer, 4-5 seconds if you're good? (I really don't know, I enjoy beer too much to chug it)

        You need to average 75 seconds per lap, including beer consumption, so you really need to run a 4:40 mile, while consuming that liquid.
