And to quote from the final words of the Letsrun oath: '...and let the crying, whining, dissecting & finger-pointing begin!'

Those who made up the panel to select the Trials sites are a cross-section of current US elite athletes, past elites, a few from the leading media, a few from leading events, a few leading coaches who'll report to a committee of top USATF officials and others who've been around the running world block a time or three. I'm sure those on the panel will feel secure in their choices despite any complaining here...but that won't stem the erudite reaction of LR readers.

Carry on.

The fact that they are going announce it tomorrow means nothing. Unless they hold it in a major marathon(as opposed to another day before event) we still have the possibilty of not getting three to the Olympics. When will USATF wake up??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

That is like asking whomever responds next to this thread when will they get a life? It ain't gonna happen

They softened the Olympic Standards so this won't happen again.

Speaking of waking up, did you fall asleep on the question mark key?

www.usatf.org would probably have the news faster than most others.

Scott,

The committee was a front. I have talked with several folks that were part of the sub committee's that think that New York on a Friday before the New York Marathon would be horrible. Many of them have expressed this to the folks on the selection panel. IT DOES NOT MATTER. Finke, Estes and Latimer have decided that they want it in New York and Mary Wittenberg has paid big for their votes. I guarantee the mens will be in New York. The process is crooked.

What are the negatives associated with NYC? I'm partial to NYC because I think it'll get the most press and because I think the NYRR has become the de facto most important running organization in the USA. I trust MaryW more than USATF to do a commendable job.

I "watched" the last OT via streaming website updates. Pretty pathetic.

It's been the same general process for eons. Just because we are slow and sometimes can't get three damn guys under the standard isn't the fault of the selection race. It is the fault of the athletes. I believe they went to a single selection race in '72? There was a time when it was actually difficult to pick the top three best US Marathoners because we had so many guys at or under 2:10. You can't just select them based on time because all courses are different. So, what you do is take the different courses out of the equation. Put our best on the starting line. If you choke at the US Trials you will choke at the Olympics. I do think there should be some appeal process for injured runners who can't make the trials. I also don't like the trials being more than 6 months away from the Olympics. A lot can happen in a year. If you're hot in February or March you'll likely still be hot by the time the Olympics come. There's too much time between NYC and the Olympic games for shit to go bad.

"sometimes can't get three damn guys under the standard" = once in 2000

What's your point? As the man said, it was the fault of the athletes, not the race.

Actually there is a reason that I can't post my name. I signed a confidentiality agreement just like the entire committee was forced to. I will tell you that several sub committee people voiced a displeasure to New York because

1. It is too far away from the Games.

2. Friday does not work for families and it creates a lousy spectator situation.

3. The media will be far more interested in the bazillion other things that are going on in New York and therefore will not give the event the attention it deserves.

4. Central Park makes for a lousy criterium course.

A few of these items were presented to the NYRR and their solution was simple. Here is $280,000 for your training centers. Now give us the damn trials.

It is done.

I was just pointing out that "sometimes" is just once. I wasn't placing the blame either way. As I pointed out above that won't happen again because the Olympic standards are softer.
