Hey everybody. As you can see, I'm attempting to break 4 minutes in the mile... downhill. I've recently run a 4:04 1600 on a flat track, and instead of training harder and working those 6 seconds down...I've decided I want to break it NOW instead of later. Well, its not really my decision...well sort of, but not really. After a night of trash talking and pasta, I told a teammate of mine that I would break 4 minutes in the mile this year (by the end of 2005...this was in early october). If I accomplished this feat he exclaimed that he would run a naked mile. We shook on it. So the next weekend I went out and did a time trial just to see where I was at...and somehow pulled that 4:04 out of my ass. Well, then the trash talking really got heated, and then it cooled down a lot. Anyway, long story short, I kinda slacked off on my speed training...and well, just training in general. I'm pretty sure I'm still in 4:04 shape for the 1600...but I'm running out of time now. And since we never specified on what surface this mile was to be run on, I'm taking advantage of that and running it downhill. So while everybody is still in school and can watch to verify, late this Friday night, I will attempt to barrel down a one way street in order to win the above described bet. But also, to be a man about it, I will attempt a REAL mile on a track later this month after some decent training. I've used "Google Earth" to measure it out to the hundredth of a foot and will also use a car just to see if there's a huge difference or anything. The elevation difference is almost 200ft...going from 353ft to 157ft pretty steadily, no sudden drop offs...except for maybe the first 20yds. Now, here's where I ask help from the letsrun community. How many of you have raced a downhill mile? Is this too steep? Should I worry about going out too hard? Is there a different strategy I should employ since this is downhill...such as positive splits vs. negative splits vs. even pacing? What should I do tomorrow in terms of a pre-race workout? Maybe some downhill 200's to get the feel of it? Also...does anybody think I could break 3:50? I think I remember reading that Steve Scott ran a 3:30 downhill mile, which is 17 seconds faster than his pr. Well Gang, thanks a lot for your help and I'll be sure to keep you all posted on this extremely stupid event. P.S. I don't want to hear about how, "Ohhh this is so bad for you...blah blah blah." I'm gonna do it. And plus, I regularly recover from stupid stuff pretty well anyways. Thanks again. |

You ran a 4:04 1600 TT (by yourself I imagine), so why not get in an actual race & go for sub 4? Makes no damn sense. |

This should be fun. Let us know how it goes. I got no tips for you man. Just let it roll. |

Good thinking....There's lots of sub 4 attempts going on in December for him to get in on! Whey didn't he think of that......please lol. |

You way of making the bet kinda reminds me of hte movie Tin Cup when the guy beats Kevin Costner in a Driving Competition by hitting the golf ball down the road so it would never stop. |

A race downhill is faster than a race on the track. The smart choice is to run downhill. Also, you should measure the course with a bike (not a car). Car pedometers can be inaccurate. A bike cpu is right on. |

i am surprised by the lack of bashing. Do we honestly believe that he ran 4:04 by himself this early. |

becareful.. running downhill and fast increases your risk of injury. |

Running downhill is excellent speed training. Definitely do some 200's on part a part of the hill which represents the average grade. Video Tape it. Hape someone ride a bike next to you holding a camera. We'd love to see you either break 4 or eat it. |

make sure you get this on video. have someone drive in a car next to you the whole way down, then post it here. i'm feeling giddy just thinking about it. i would suggest going out like you would on a flat surface, trying not to let your legs take too much abuse, ten over the last 300m or so, just let the hill take you as fast as you can go. just don't fall on your face. you won't break 4 if you do that. i've run a downhill mile, but nowhere near that steep. |

I'm surprised as well. The 4:04 1600 was not completely alone...I had two of my roommates pace me. One took the first 800 and the second took the third lap, and then the first pacer came back and did the last lap. We actually have that on video as well, but its a pretty big file and I wouldn't know how to post it anywhere. |

just curious who you are then because thats pretty impressive |

I'm gonna keep this anonymous, because if coach found out he might not be too happy. Sorry guys. |

Don't post the video because that would blow your cover. Stay anonymous (at least for now). |

i want to see both of these videos!!!!! |

I accept it that you don't want to give your name. I guess you can argue that once it's done, it's done. You just don't want the coach to try to stop you. I just really want what you're saying to be true so we can watch a video of you either breaking 4:00 or breaking your teeth. |

I'll give a shout out to Mort and Downin: Run the millenium mile on New Year's Eve. Here the information: http://www.millenniummile.com/newsmm7_2.htm I'd say it is worth about 10 seconds. |

definitely head up to the great state and check out the millennium mile. it's worth at least 10 seconds, the only problem is that it's as cold as f***. but it's extremely fun. and the drop on that course is only like 80', so your 200' drop will probably blow your mind. |

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the downhill street starts off steeper and gradually gets less steeper. Its not really steep to begin with...but the grade definitley lessens as the course progresses. And i'm not gonna get on a plane to run a race. but it does sound fun. |
