Sun Yingjie, winner of the women's marathon event at the ongoing National Games, tested positive in a doping test. The test was carried out after the women's 10,000m race during which Sun won a silver medal. As a result of the violation, Sun was stripped of the silver medal. Further investigation will be carried out and sanctions followed accordingly, said the State General Administration of Sport. 26-year-old Sun Yingjie finished third in women's 10,000m at the 2003 World Championships in Paris. She also won two gold medals in women's 5,000m and 10,000m at 2002 Asian Games http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/301/2005/10/21/165@26132.htm |

Should be interesting to see what type of punishment China hands out to drug cheats. I'm ignorantly assuming jail time. That would make 2006 'edgy'. |

I am very suspicious of the Chinese and their motives. I have been to China many many times for training, and I won't be going back. EVER. Would the Chinese authorities fake a positive on one of their very best female distance runners in order to tell the world "HEY LOOK AT US, WE'LL BUST ONE OF BEST RUNNER"????? Absolutely Yes. In China, the state has the power, not Sun Yingjie. I think she could be a pawn in the whole game of "saving face" while Chinese scientists, as we speak, concoct their own undectable blood builders, hormones and steroids for the 2008 Olympics. It's all about appearances. |

Interesting take Jason. I completely agree with you. That entire country is just sneaky as all hell. |

Well, won't WADA and the IOC bring their own testers in from outside the country and don't they have to have the same unilateral access to all athletes, regardless of if they are from the host country or not? Just saying that any conspiracy theory either goes right out the door or should lead every respectable nation to boycott in the noninstance/instance that china refuses independent testing or handling of it's own athletes. Short of that, they can dope and run in their own events till the end of time. Who cares? |

Is the timing of this convenient enough for her to serve her 2 years and still be free & clear for 2008? |

I agrree with you about China but you need to be careful about singling out individual countries. What about the US ? In the 1980's positive test results for athletes such as Carl Lewis were swept under the carpet. Many nations are corrupt in this repect. Perhaps the only nation right now that is radical in the fight against doping is France and people such as Lance Armstrong complain about it. |

If she is "banned" for the next 2 years does she have to submit for testing during this time? Carrying the conspiracy theory farther, perhaps the Chinese banned her now so she can train for the next 2 years with no fear of drug testing. Of course the Chinese never run in competitions (outside of Olympics and WCs) where testing is done anyways, so this would probably be unnecessary...just a paranoid theory...what do you think? |

Meanwhile, back on the range in the land of the free, elections are being sabotaged or bought, nations are being bombed back to the dark ages, etc, etc. If her drink was spiked, as she claims, it'll be on tape... |

Oh hoo hoo, I can't wait for the barrage of braindead anti-French rantings you're likely to get for this. Especially with Benoit Z. having just been busted - which actually proves your point, not disproves it, but someone will twist it around. More than a few times have I seen the US referred to as "the world leader in doping" in non-US media. Sometimes with "since the fall of the GDR" appended. Lance is guilty by association. Had he been Canadian the accusations would have been fewer and less believable. He'd speak better French too - well, a sort of French. |

Jason, You're never going back to China? I think you should hold on to the possibility of running an important race in China in 2008! |

Right, because there is nothing even remotely suspect about a woman that runs 2:21 and 30 hours later runs 31 for the 10000, and then wins her 5000 shortly after that. Yeah, it must be a government consipiracy. |
