Danette Doetzel (top Michigan State runner last year) has been listed on Providence's XC roster for the past three weeks. But Doetzel did not run in Providence's first two XC meets. Nor was her name mentioned in Providence's 2005 Women's XC Preview. Is she red shirting, injured, or required to sit out the season because Michigan won't release her? |

I would not have released her if I were Michigan State. She is fast but has some major issues! |

She wasnt released by MSU, so she has to sit a year. She is training with Providence, but is not able to compete for a year. |

Why wouldn't you have released her? She dosen't want to run for your school, so act like a baby and refuse to release her. This shows little class on behalf of MSU, but it's not suprising considering they have done similar things to their 6 best athletes over the past year. I would warn all recruits to stay away from any program controlled by Angela Goodman. |

---------------- A lot of expense comes with recruiting and giving a scholarship to one like Danette. If it was OK to release her then it should be OK to release all that would ask. Sure, if the university wasn't holding up their end of the deal, such as taking away money or coach leaving, then a release would be in order. Why Danette left is between her and the college and we may never know. Could you imagine if we allowed athletes to leave just because they don't like it anymore. I'm sure if a case could have been made, it would have been and a release happened. Rules are rules, they are there for a purpose. |

Well that's exactly what happened. The coach that recruited her left for greener pastures, and she decided to try MSU out anyway. She didn't like it and wanted out. Could you imagine if we allowed athletes to leave just because they don't like it anymore. Yeah I can imagine that, if fact I wouldn't want anyone on my team who didn't want to be there. Plenty of people transfer without having to sit out a year. Danetta was leaving not matter what, heck they even kicked her off of the team! Why add insult to injury and not release her for the following year? Obviously MSU did not want her on the team, so why not release her? Obviously this gesture had one objective, to spite Ms. Doetzel as much as possible. Rules are rules, yes, but name another school with a high profile athlete in recent years that handled the same situation as poorly? |

If they didn't want her on the team then give her a release. I agree with that! |

This was an unwise move on the part of MSU. It will scare away recruits who might've given MSU a chance since they had an option to leave without losing a year if it didn't work out. What would it hurt to give her a release? The only reason I could see not giving it is if she went to Notre Dame or some other school in the Great Lakes region and MSU thinks it would be detrimental to their success this season. |

Demonstrating a trend... Michigan State's wrestling coach refused to release a graduated wrestler a few years ago who still had a year of eligibility. The guy first refused to help the kid get into MSU grad school, then refused to release him when he couldn't get in. |

Danette and her coach were nothing nothing but annoying from the start. She wouldnt listen to the coaches at MSU, her HS coach wouldnt let her go. From the begining Danette was very difficult to deal with. In MSU's defense had she complied with team rules and shown respect for the coaching stafff and university I am certain that she would have been released. She was a pain and needs to learn a lesson in life. |

What happened to Michelle Carson and Jamie Kryzminski? I know they both had eligibility this past year-- how did they do? Are either running after college? It seemed they had so much promise. |

Jamie is done with MSU and has moved to her job in Illinois. Still running, but is working too, so probably not with the intensity that she was at State. She chose not to run for the new coach, and stood up to defend Danette in her meeting to get her released. Michelle trained with the team throughout the spring, and was going to run the steeple for the conference meet, but wasnt healthy. So they are both done with MSU. |

I have met Danette, and seen her compete. I cannot claim to have known her for a long time, but I have to say this: she is one of the most mature athletes her age that I have met ...also, I think that anyone that says she has "issues" has misunderstood Danette. She is honest and real, and I think sometimes that is hard for some people to handle. |

As a coach who recruited Danette when she was looking at a transfer, she came across as extremely mature and serious about her training program. I wish that she was at my school, however, she is happy at the program that she is at. Good luck to her. It is a shame that a school would not release her to a non-conference school. |

What were her other choices and when did she start the transfer process? I don't know what the qualifying standard is for the Commonwealth games at 5k. Maybe if she isn't hurt she'll go to Oz in March and compete for Canada. |

I think you are mistaken Yankee. You are correct that she is fast but she definitely does not have issues. I know Danette very well and she has a good head on her shoulders. She's knows what she want's and she has worked hard to get to where she is and continues to work hard. Your forgetting one very important fact Yankee. You have to look out for Number 1. If she wasn't happy at MSU, then she made a smart move getting out. Why spend 4 years unhappy with your surroundings, no matter how much you love what you're doing? Best of luck Danette. Didn't Doetzel transfer to and sit out a year at Providence LAST year? She ran at Franklin Park as an "unattached" at least once last year, with Mary Cullen I believe. |
