You'd think more of those guys would have realized there was no way they were going to beat Lagat off a slow early pace

I just read the Reuters story about Lagat online. It identifies him as the "world indoor 1500-meter champion." Don't these reporters actually pay attention?

No, Hilbert...the Reuters article was entirely about Lagat, and it referred to him as the 1500-meter champ

Komen's world record of 7:20 is 2 3:40's back to back. Why would the world's second fastest 1500 meter runner at 3:26 have any problem running 3:38.5 after a very slow start?

Going out in a 4:17 for 1500m. You would think SOMEONE would want the pace picked up. I wonder what the tension build up was in that race?

He shouldn't have trouble at all. Especially when he's let use EPO unlike some of his competitors from the West and Asia.

Ummm, you don't really think that, do you? If you mean that they could have run that time with even pacing and a rabbit, then yes. Solinsky can't even break 4 yet, let alone run a 3:56.xx equivalent at the end of a race, and I doubt he could run a 2:23 kilometer in any conditions save down-hill and straight. The key is not in what the time is, but how you got to that time. If Riley had run from the front and set the pace, if he'd even gotten into finals in the first place, that is, he would have led through a 5:20 first two kms before being dropped by the rest of the field on the final k. Lagat and Silva put 7 seconds on Craig Mottram in the last km!
