Boston Indoor games: Willis, Dibaba, Flanagan, Webb and Rupp - who else? 1/16/2009 6:24AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Just noticed this one...

http://www.runnersweb.com/running/rw_news_frameset.html?http://www.runnersweb.com/running/news_2009/rw_news_20090116_BIG_Flanagan.html

"Hailing from Marblehead, MA, hometown favorite, Shalane Flanagan, will make her professional indoor debut at 5000m on the same track in which she set one of her three American records"

"She is scheduled to face Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba, the woman who crossed the line first in Beijing in both the 5000m and 10,000m races."

Isn't Dibaba running the 3000m? There doesn't seem to be a 5000m on the program although I guess that could change?

I see the women's 5000m listed:

http://www.bostonindoorgames.com/events-results/

and the news about Shalane on the front page.

Looks like they were slow to update the site as previously there was a women's 3000m, no women's 5000m and there was also a men's 3000m which has now been replaced with a two mile.

The previous announcement was that Dibaba would run the 3000m.

But it seems that might have changed too.

Some more updates...
http://www.letsrun.com/2009/reebok0116.php

So it looks like Willis vs Webb in the mile. My money would have to be on Willis at this stage. That's not to say Webb couldn't make a comeback before the world champs in Berlin, but is he ready to beat Willis yet?

In the women's 5000m it's Tirunesh Dibaba vs Flanagan. I thought this bit was interesting...

"Flanagan, 27, will run her first-ever 5000m indoors, according to meet director Mark Wetmore, an event which was not on the original event program. It will be her first race of the 2009 season.

"We've added a 5000m," Wetmore wrote in an e-mail message. "And that's what she'll run."

So did they add the 5000m specially for Shalane? If so, when did Dibaba decide to switch from the 3000 to the 5000 - are they even going to run a 3000 - can they fill 2 quality fields for a 3000 and 5000?

Who else would they get to run?

Kim Smith runs for Reebok and has a 14:50.46 indoor 5000m from a few years back when her outdoor time wasn't that fast, so she could be one. Katie McGreggor is another Reebok runner we might see here.

With the men's 2 mile there is Rupp, but I'm not sure who else will be in that one either. Last year there was Craig Mottram in the 3000m. Does anyone know what's happening with Mottram this indoor season?

The Boston folks are doing a pretty bad job of being clear with their information. That release on Flanagan, Rupp, Webb doesn't even make it clear what event Rupp is doing.

it would not surprise me at all if they had a womens 5k and womens 3k and it would not surprise me if flanagan runs one race and t. dibaba runs the other that way bostons ethiopian community can watch t. dibaba run in attempt at a world record, and also have the hometown girl in a race she has a better than average chance to win, kind of like when ovett and coe would run in the same meet and 1 would run the mile and the other would run the 1500.

yes they can get 2 fields for the womens 3k and 5k, the idea is probably to showcase flanagan and t. dibaba in separate races and fill the fields with 14:45-15:15 for 5k runners, look for runners that wetmore manages to be in the field, e. dibaba probably as a pacer for her sister, werknesh kidane a 14:33 for 5k runner coming back, aheza kiros a 15:09 for 5k and 31:06 for 10k. there is an endless line of girls in kenya and ethiopia who are waiting for their chance to perform overseas for the first time.

The U.S. indoor 5000 record is 15:07 by Marla Runyan. You'd have to think Flanagan can get that pretty easily on the Boston track.

That would make sense, but that is not what they are saying:

Somehow I don't think we've seen the last update to this story... hopefully the athletes know what events they are going to run.

I don't see anything in the news releases on the meet site that say anything about Dibaba and a 3k.

Why would they run mens 2-mile instead of 3k. You can't use a 2mile for USATF qualifying.

Why couldn't they have FAT at 3000m en route?

The original announcements said she would run the 3000m.
Dibaba to return to Boston for another 3000m outing
http://www.iaaf.org/news/kind=100/newsid=48872.html

Then they said she would run the 5000m, but now they are saying Kara Goucher will run the 3000m and... " Tirunesh Dibaba, previously announced to compete in Boston, has withdrawn from the event citing a slow recovery from an injury."

Read the January 8 press release on the organizers website. It does not specify what event she was planning to contest. Looks like the IAAF/Chris Turner jumped the gun assuming what she was running.
