Jake Watson, younger brother of Luke Watson, signed early with Notre Dame. Jake was 3rd in the Minnesota state meet in 15:20, behind Garrett Heath (15:15) and Yahya Iman (15:17). Garrett Heath, the top returner to FootLocker Nationals, signed early with Stanford. |

there are about 90 shays and they're all pretty decent athletes and a lot are runners. |

In chronological order of when Mrs Shay pumped them out: Casey Shay - D3 Steeple national champ I do so believe, now teaching English to Koreans in South Korea Ryan Shay - the most decorated, 10k national champ, USA Marathon champ, etc, etc Nathan Shay - ND runner for 3 years, decided not to run senior year. Class D Michigan state champ Elliot Shay - Freshman at Citadel, no idea on how his season went Stephen Shay - Recent Div 4 (Class D with a new name) XC state champ in 1535 at MIS, comparable time to Shay with much better conditions I hear the sisters ran/run well also. |

Pretty close "Family Tree," but not quite. Here are some resumes off the top of my head and not necessarily in chronological order: Jodie Shay-Kleymeer: Kinney (before Footlocker for you young bucks) finalist, not sure how she did at nats. Michigan Class C state champ in cross (Bellvue), runner up in Class A after moving to Mt. Pleasant. Still the US age group record holding for 25k at 14 years old. She got things started with the "running thing" in the family. (Now a teacher in St. Clair Shores, suburb of Detroit) Joseph (Casey) Shay - Runner up State Champ in Hawaii in track (1600m and 3200m), MITCA indoor state champ (Mile), 2 time Class D XC State Champ, multi time All-American in XC and Track NAIA (Hillsdale College and Lubbock Christian University), NAIA steeple chase national champ '96 (also top 7 on LCU's XC team when they beat Arkansas at the Chilli Pepper Invite the year Arkansas won NCAA's win a very low score...dont recall the year). Currently teaching in South Korea and ran his 1st marathon last Oct. (2:40:00) Sarah Shay - Regional Champ in XC (I believe that she and I were the first bro/sister to win a MI XC regional on the same day, not positive though), multi year All state (XC and Track) decided not to run in college at Northwood University. Currently enlisted in the Army to study jounalism and linguistics. Amie Shay - Multi time All-State in both XC and track, ran at Northwood University, transfered to Adam State College (thats where my conection with Vigil begins), retruned to Northwood after a year, decided not to run for a year, ran track her last year and did the steeple chase. Currently in pharmacudical sales living in the Netherlands. Me... Nathan Shay - Multi time All-State in track/XC, Runner Up State champ Class D XC, Class D 3200m state champ, ran at ND for 3 XC seasons/ 2 track, lost interest in running, gained interest in his studies, graduated in last May. Currently substitute teaching in the Detroit area and interviewing for management consulting/ financial consulting postition (most of you know the job market is tough right now). Elliott - Multi time all state in both track/XC, damn good work ethic, just not quite the talent there, was at the Citadel until a couple weeks ago, quite school do to some hazing incidents (legal action being taken, not on his behalf...long story...too bad), Currently back at home in Northern Mich looking for a school to attend beginning next semester, most likely will run at the chosen school. and last but not least... Stephan Shay - Multi time all state in track/xc, Class D state champ last spring in the 3200m, current State champ (class d) running just 5 sec. slower than I did my senior year on same course, very competitve, good work ethic, and talented. I'll go on runs with him when I'm back home and he can pound the long runs. While I was at ND a few months ago, he came down on an unoffical visit and I took him on a 15miler were he hammered a sub 1:28:00...I didnt think he could do it. Currently looking for a school to attend. He will most likely NOT attend ND, but it is still a possibility. As for the other 82 shays...not quite sure what they're up to. |
