Phil Lundin is leaving his position as head track coach at the University of Minnesota to become head cross country and track coach at St. Olaf, a DIII program.

Why the surprise? Same Salary, half the pressure, less travel, smarter athletes!

according to the article I read, it is a pay cut. not sure if that is true, but i guess it wouldnt be too surprising. D1 coaches make good money.

He was a good leader. He has helped coach some of the best US born 400m collegiate runners in Minnesota history. I think a 3:02 4x400m team?

He will be missed because he does have some heart. I hope the "heartless" assistant does not take over.

WOW - Coach Lundin is a great coach, and an even more outstanding person. He will be missed in the Big Ten Conference.

Personally, I think Lundin's an asshole. He didn't want me on the team when I transferred to Minn 20 yrs ago even though my time the previous year would've placed 5th at the Big Tens. And all I wanted was to walk on.

Let us not get off topic. Phil is a heck of a guy and did remarkable things while at Minnesota. He will be missed, but I think that his team is resilient enough to bounce from such a loss. Further, his athletes can only be happy for the guy as he has given so much to the program.

To those wanting to turn this into a plaz bashing thread: you clearly have no relationship with the man, so to make a judgment in haste is wrong. Once you earn his trust, he is truly one of the most loyal and genuine persons I know.

Scott Bennett is another MN coach. He might be best as an assistant, a role he has filled at a number of quality programs. However, in the times that I have met him (e.g., Big Ten and other meets at Wisconsin) he has made a favorable impression. Maybe he would be the internal candidate of choice.

"Scott Bennett continues to build on his remarkable reputation for developing elite-level athletes having coached a number of top collegiate, national and Olympic stars. He is among a select group of coaches who can claim to have trained NCAA champions in nearly every field event during his 25-plus years in the coaching profession."

Phil will be missed, the team is in shock right now.
The thought currently is who will go from the team, though no one is expected to. The upperclassmen are buckling the hatches and getting ready for meets. We need to prepare for Big Tens, not wonder who we will get

As for walk ons...Phil loved 'em...if they could produce. I find it hard to believe he wouldn't take a point scorer with open arms unless something else was amiss. (grades, major injury, etc.) It's the reasons Job Boyd was dismissed by Phil.

And Phil hasn't been head coach at the U for 20 years, only 13. Griak was before him.

Yeah Griak was the head coach then but Lundin was who I met with. Lundin came to Minn in '86. This was in '89. He dismissed from his office within about 2 minutes saying he had 3 other guys coming in who were faster than me. No one, to my knowledge, the next season posted a time faster than mine the previous year. And there we no problems. I transferred to Minn with a 3.25 GPA and certainly no disciplinary problems. I gave up a scholarship at an out of state school to come back home to help my family (my dad lost his job). I couldn't afford to go to Hamline or St. Thomas so at 19 my running career was over because he wouldn't lst me walk on. Sorry but to this day it still pisses me off.

if you did in fact have a good time (fast enough to be one of the top distance runners?) i doubt hed turn you away. you dont cost him any money. you are a walk on. i think you might be delusional.

I think he just didn't like you. There is definitely another side to this story. I know Phil and he, like almost every other college coach in the country trying to stretch 12.6 grants as far as they can, would never turn away a potential point scorer. Maybe he just didn't want to deal with the kind of kid who would hold a petty grudge for 19 years.

If you consider Coach Lundin an asshole you are completely delusional. First of all, you can't just pick your best time from a full year of running and "place" yourself at 5th. If you had any idea about the Big Ten you would realize that many of the finals contested are not won with a personal best. Secondly, getting fifth is not exactly setting the world on fire. Third, you clearly aren't very objective about it since it has been nearly 20 years since this occurred and you are still "pissed off". I have a very difficult time believing that he would give you only "2 minutes" of your time. In addition, if you are paying attention you are the only one on this thread who has said anything negative.
It has been my personal experience that Coach Lundin is hands down one of the best coaches and people one could hope to be associated with.
