3 Brown, Darren SR Texas 3:59.99R Wow, what a way to get under 4. If that is his first time, big time congrats. Is that 4 - sub 4 milers Texas now has? |

Yeah--if he just clips off another 14 seconds, he'll break the WR! _________________________________________________________ I realize that even in the US the mile is run less frequently--and very rarely in the rest of the world--but even so, we really need to recalibrate our thinking. When Ryun ran sub-4:00 as a 17-year-old, that *really* was major, because the WR was only about five seconds faster, and 4:00 had only been broken ten years earlier. But now? A 3:50 is farther (about seven seconds away) from the world record than Ryun's 3:59 was, and Walker broke 3:50 more than 30 years ago, not 10. I'll grant that 4:00 is still a nice round number, but we have got to stop giving a *ton* of credit to times (for post-scholastic runners) that are slower than 3:50. We've mostly adjusted our thinking in the pole vault, 400m, etc.--why not the mile? |

I think one of the reasons is that 343 is so ridiculous and even the fastest pros rarely run under 350. Webb ran 346.9 last year and he had the fastest time of the year. Running sub 400 really isnt that big of a deal, but getting down to 350-355 is pretty good. Sub 400 is good for a college runner. (BTW, the keyboard Im using is a little messed up, hence no colons or apostrophes). |

Not sure why the original poster was so excited with Manzano's time. People get too excited when they see anything under 4. Under 4 should be considered a joke for Manzano. a 357 is good but nothign shocking for him. |

I think the real question is this: Was it a full mile? |

If you thought that was a serious comment then you haven't been reading the boards enough! |

I think the deal is that Leo ran that fast so early. It's a meet record by a good chunk, and Leo is still pretty early on in his training progression. Compared to that egg Webb laid in New York, this is a nice performance. But I don't think a great deal can be drawn from either of their performances. Yet. |

PS--Anyone know why Jake Morse was running unattached when he was running for Texas at NCAA Indoors just a few weeks ago? Did his eligibility run out after indoors? |

Webb didn't "lay an egg", dumbass, he was sick. There's a difference. |

If Webb was so damned sick he shouldn't have started the race in the first place. Like I said, not a great deal should be taken from either performance. Don't take comments like "laid and egg" so friggen seriously, dweeb. Chill the hell out. |

Why? Running and racing is his job. Being sick is part of being a runner. |

What you all are missing is that this meet has been run for years and now Leo has run faster than them all. Based on relays, heat, wind, lack of serious competition, etc. the mile, while built up, has failed to impress. Whereas there have been sub-4 minute milers compete in the past, none has produced. Now Leo has done that. And in front of the home crowd. Some previous posters have mentioned the "great" times from the past. EPO aside, this is simply a good mark, from a good athlete and he should be commended. |

Good time by Manzano. I saw Pablo Solares go 3:43 at Rice a couple of weeks ago by himself. Time for these two guys to race again. |
