It's the Letsrun "crowd favorite" Mike Stember (pre-spandex, at least), but check out this race:

Just sick.
Ugh.

"He's trying to steal it on this lap because he probably doesn't have a next lap!"

I was watching expecting it to come in the last 200 and be a nice kick, but nothing special. But damn.

Kind of weird how he takes the lead at the start, then gives it right up to four other dudes. Like he was playing games or something. It's easy to see now where his cockiness comes from.

LOL I was going to say the same thing and post like an El G finish but wow that was gutsy. What was that last 600?

Does anybody have the 2003 CA state meet where Kyle Alcorn kicks down the last lap of the 3200 in 55? I belive his last 200 was in 26. He didn't win, as he was back in 6th at the bell, but ended up 2nd, only a fraction of a second behind the winner, Tim Nelson. I believe that 6 guys went sub 9 that day.

I was there in the stands, it was the best race I have seen in person (including oly trials and other "big time" meets). There were some high school giants in that race

Tim Nelson
Young Sun-Leal
Kyle Alcorn
Mo Tarfeh
Austin Ramos

Never heard of any of them. Instead of giants they might be mini-me's.

Here are the splits I got off the video (someone else may want to check). First lap was about 62 (i missed the gun by a bit, had 61-mid), then: 64.5(2:06),2:37,3:05,4:04 (58.2 last 400,1:26.2 last 600,1:58-low last 800)

After his Jr. year 4:07.10y indoors, and this huge negative-split 4:04 1600 in '97, I have to conclude that Stember is the first miler in the "modern" era (post-70's) who could have scared 4:00 in a well-paced elite race. Sage actually went close, as did Hall, and Webb delivered the goods, but it all started with Stember.

Up at Green Mountain Running camp back in 1997 or something Tim Hacker came to give a speech and showed a video of an indoor meet... he came from so far back it looked like was getting lapped and we wound up winning at the line.

If anyone has that video, Youtube it, please!
best kick

best kick in a race I saw was a video of Franklyn Sanchez vs. Andy Powell @ Mass indoor track state champs 2 mile. Sanchez looked like he was dropped then came back with an amazing kick. Reggie Lewis was going so crazy that Powell couldn't hear Sanchez coming. Sanchez got him right before the line. That is how I remember it at least! Those two had some battles.

If someone had that race and put it on YouTube, I would be very thankful.

Bekele's 53.02 last lap in the Olympic 10k!
Every runner needs to see this one.

That really wasn't a kick...he slowed the last 2-300...he just made a nice mid race push. I'd have to nominate that native american 10k guy in the olympics....milly bills? :) If you watch his video, seeing him weave in and out of the pack to come from nowhere.....Thats a kick!
lets not forget...

and Alcorn did the same thing in 2002 to win the state meet by the same margin as he lost it n 2003.

Tim Nelson and Mo Trafeh are unknown wannabes? And Alcorn? And who exactly are you? Mo Trafeh is one of the better runners in the entire country. Tim Nelson was top 5 on the Wisconsin squad that won NCAA XC last year. Wake up, dude.
