Anyone out there have personal remembrances/stories about this athlete? Did he really do the daily balls-to-the-wall training he was known for? Looking at his championship races (Commonwealth & Olympic) he didn't have a very impressive record. Did he once say he hated every moment of training he ever did? (or am I confusing him with someone else?). Any in-depth info would be appreciated.

my knowledge of Clayton is sketchy at best, but I know he used to do outrageous mileage 200miles+ and do it all quite fast.... actually I just hunted out his book from the shelf between "put me back on my bike" the tom simpsonn story, and joe hendersons "the long run solution" was Running to the top by Derek Clayton

At one point in the book it shows a photo of a page in his diary where there is a passage of training that goes like so..
Am 6miles PM 27 miles
AM 15 miles PM 13m hard
AM 10m PM 18m
AM 10m PM 22m
Am 10m PM 17m
AM 10m PM 17m

This period is followed by comments such as strapped tendon, sore knee etc (surprise surprise), oops found something better, looks like I was full of shit before says here he did 5 160 mile weeks consectutively then rested with three 100 mile weeks before going on a world tour of some description. Theres a good quote here actually...

"I ran nothing but quality miles, never letting up on myself once during training. I knew that to set the record I wanted, I would have to train on the very brink of injury. If I went over that edge I would simply have to start over. If I managed to avoid getting hurt I could do it."

Derek did hit 300 plus kms sometimes apparently. It seems he ran best off about 260kms however. I believe he pushed the kms up too high leading into major champs. He had some serious injuries during his career. One Olympic marathon was completed with a terribly swollen knee I think. The guys of that era say he used to hammer everything and often did long runs of 40km or more at about 2.20 marathon pace.
He's quite a big guy about 188cm/6'2" and raced at 73-74kg/160-162lb. In recent years he has been seen cycling at high speeds up and down the Melbourne seaside.
