The talk of track and field the last few days has been the so called "Dream Mile" that took place in Arcadia, CA Saturday between America's top prep stars. However, true track aficionados know that the real dream matchup is taking place on Easter Sunday. That's when the so called "Dream 400" between LetsRun.com co-founder Weldon "The Marathoner" Johnson and LetsRun.com frequent contributor Scott "The Miler" Anderson will take place at an undisclosed location on a dirt-track in Arizona. The Marathoner and The Miler have been living and training together for the last few months in the high altitude environment of Flagstaff, AZ. Things seemed to be going well but suddenly things turned for the worse. Details are still sketchy but they must have had some sort of falling out as Scott could be seen loading his belongings today outside their one bedroom apartment and a source close to The Enclave track club in Washington, DC stated on the condition of anonymity that Scott was definitely returning to DC to train. The Marathoner and The Miler reportedly had a heated shouting match the other day and nearly came to blows. Calmer heads prevailed however and they decided to settle things once and for all on the track. No one's exactly sure how the 400 meter distance was chosen but the leading theory is that the Marathoner is so angry with Anderson that he wants to simply humilliate Anderson by beating him at the short distance which most track fans would think would benefit The Miler. Johnson (click here to see exlclusive video of him finishing his final training session before Sunday's race) has always bragged that he has hidden latent miler speed and he's evidently confident enough to put his claims to the test. Moreover, in addition to proving he's got real speed, Weldon also evidently wants to prove a dark theory long held in track and field but rarely discussed (at least in front of Scott) that he's in the wrong event, doesn't have the wheels for the mile and should move up in distance. Enigmatic coaching guru John Kellogg did throw one caveat into the picture. Instead of a fresh 400, the duo are going to go at it after doing 10 x 1000 with 30-35 seconds rest. "I can't let some petty argument get in the way of proper training," said Kellogg. "Wejo's got Mt. Sac on Friday and Scott's unlikely to ever have an aerobic workout in his life again, so I thought this was perfect." Details
as to the time and site of the race have been kept a tight secret
out of fear of violence from angry fans of the losing runner.
The Miler and Marathoner are two of the more popular runners in
track and field and their fans are extremely passionate and prone
to violence. Luckily, LetsRun.com has secured exclusive video
rights to the race which should be up late Sunday
evening. |
