Quote Of The Day

Alberto Salazar talking in 2006 about the idea that Chris Whetstine might have sabotaged Justin Gatlin by rubbing him with an illegal substance.

A key part of Salazar’s defense is that he tested testosterone on his sons as he was fearful that someone like  Whetstine could sabotage Galen Rupp, not because he wanted to see how much micro-dosing one could get away with. As a result, it’s worth pointing out that when Whetstine was accused of sabotaging Gatlin in 2006, Alberto Salazar himself was one of the most vocal defenders. One of Whetstine’s first public statements in 2006 was made to LetsRun.com when he wrote, “I am comforted by the continued support given me by members of the running community, specifically Tom Jordan and Alberto Salazar.”

Additionally, a LetsRun.com review of the 900+ pages of Justin Gatlin trial transcript reveals that Gatlin never claimed he was sabotaged with Androgel (he said it was DHEA) and was not busted for violating the T/E ratio which is what Salazar tested. Gatlin was busted for having exogenous testosterone in his system as detected by the more expensive direct carbon isotope ratio test (CIR). Lastly, even Gatlin’s expert defense witness called it “improbable” that an hour would be enough time to sabotage someone after a race as it would likely take longer than that to get into your system.
