Evan Jager's Steeple Debut at Mt. Sac Relays a Very Successful 8:26.14

Evan Jager, the Oregon Track Club runner who made the World Championship team at 5000m as a 20 year old, made his steeplechase debut at the Mt. Sac Relays last night and the result was a big pr and win in a meet record 8:26.14. Finishing third was two time US World Championship team member Dan Huling.

A great debut for Jager. With Bernard Lagat, Galen Rupp, Chris Solinsky and Matt Tegenkamp all possibly contesting 5000m, Jager realizes making the Olympic team in the steeple might be a lot easier.

The steeple is sometimes viewed as the graveyard of distance runners, but Jager is a top flight talent turning to steeple at a young age, and his initial run shows he has a lot of promise in it.

To put Jager's run in perspective, last year only two Americans (Billy Nelson and Ben Bruce) broke 8:20 in the event. The Olympic "A" qualifying standard is 8:23.10. The American record is Dan Lincoln's 8:08.82 from 2006.
