Editor's note: Prior to each final, we'll re-preview each mid-d and distance event, but we wanted to give you a quick overview of the event prior to the first round.
On day 2, the women's 1,500 will get underway. It's unlikely that any big names will fall by the wayside as the field will just be reduced from 35 to 24, with the top 6 in each of the three heats automatically advancing as well as the next six on time.
Quick Thought #1: Some pretty good runners won't advance, as there are 28 runners who have run under 4:06.00 this year. Each heat features at least 9 sub-4:06 performers.
Quick Thought #2: The favorite has to be Maryam Yusuf Jamal. Yes, her 2011 season hasn't been error free, but she's the two-time defending champion, is the world leader for 2011 and defeated the women who was on top of the world thanks to her two straight Golden League titles, Morgan Uceny, in her last race.
Quick Thought #3: Heat 3 is the one we'll have our eyes on. With so many people advancing, it will be hard to learn a lot, but it features arguably three of the biggest players in the whole field, as it has both Uceny and Jamal as well the Russian champ in Ekaterina Martynova.
Quick Thought #4: The women who crossed the line first in 2009 but was DQed, Natalia Rodríguez, can't be discounted just because she's lightly raced (two 1,500s). She went from 4:08 to 4:01.50 from early July to late July.
Quick Thought #5: American Morgan Uceny has the best chance of medalling by far of any American-born mid-d or distance runner. Based on her 2011 results, on paper, she should medal. But this is her first World Championships and September 1st is a long way away from mid-July when Uceny was on top of the world.
LRC Prediction:
1) Jamal
2) Martynova
3) Rodriguez
Below you will find two sets of "heat sheets." The first lists only the people in each his with a seasonal best under 4:03.00. The 2nd lists everyone.
