The IAAF is reporting that former American indoor 5,000m record holder Galen Rupp will race 2004 Olympic steeple bronze medallist Paul Kipsiele Koech in the 5,000m in Düsseldorf, Germany on February 11th.
Last year in Düsseldorf, Koech ran 13:02.95, becoming the 4th fastest of all time indoors.
Rupp has had success at 5,000m indoors the last two years in February. Two years ago on February 13th, he ran 13:18.12 to set the American record. Last year on February 6th, he improved on that by running 13:14.21, but he was fourth in the race, as Bernard Lagat lowered the American record to 13:11.50.
Rupp finished second last week in the BUPA Great Edinburgh XC meet. He appears to be in better shape in early January than in years past. Last year, he opened with a 1:54 800m in mid-January (but was sick) and two years ago opened with a 1:51/4:10 double in mid-January. For more on Rupp's 2011 and his training, click here.
