In the men's race, Dathan Ritzenhein waited until 9km of the 12km distance to make his move, but once he did the race was over. After patiently trailing Team USA Minnesota's Patrick Smyth and adidas' Scotty Bauhs for the entire race, Ritzenhein took off and won his 3rd USA senior XC title by a comfortable 18-second margin.

Smyth led the field for the first 25 minutes of the race in an impressive performance for the young professional. He would hold off former DII star Bauhs for 2nd-place, yet again another top showing for Smyth since turning pro last June.

Brooks runner Ryan Vail ran a patient race to again qualify for the USA XC worlds team with a strong finish. He finished behind Bobby Curtis and Ben Bruce to complete the top-6 finishers, all of whom can compete for the US at worlds if they choose to go.

Women's Senior Race - Flanagan WAY Better Than The Rest

Shalane Flanagan
took the opposite approach as Ritzenhein as she took off in front of the pack right from the gun. Only Saucony runner Molly Huddle dared stay with Flanagan but even with her 15:20 5000m performance from a week ago she was no match for Flanagan after the first few kilometers. In the end Flanagan won by 51 seconds, covering the 8km course in 25:10.

Flanagan's superiority in the race should be noted again. She beat the field by 51 seconds (over 10 seconds per mile) and would have finished 14th in the Boys Junior race with her 25:10 time on the identical course. Making Flanagan's winning margin even more impressive is the fact that the woman in 2nd (Huddle) ran 15:20 for 5000m a week ago.

Defending women's champion Emily Brown finished in 7th, but may still book a ticket to Poland if one of the 6 women in front of her elects not to represent the US at the World Cross Country Championships in March. Katie McGregor has been a mainstay on the US World XC team but today only finished 9th, almost 2 minutes behind Flanagan.

Boys Junior Race

University of Portland freshman Trevor Dunbar made quick work of the field in the junior boys' race. Only 2km into the race Dunbar took off and built a large lead. Wind bit into Dunbar's energy and his lead slimmed late in the race. Despite tiring, Dunba was able to hold off everyone including runner-up Walter Schafer from Colorado by a fairly comfortable margin to win the junior title.
