The Mt. Sac Relays start Thursday and go thru Saturday. This meet was
one of our favorite meets back when we were competing. But we now
realize that the farther you get away from competing that the average
track fan has no idea about the meet or who is running what as next to
zero is done to promote the individual races. When you can't go to the
meet homepage and find out who is competing, we have no idea how our
sport is supposed to get more popular.
Thus, we've decided to
provide you with a 5 minute guide to the relays so you'll know what to
watch or look for. A full meet schedule can be found here or you can find the individual division schedules here.
The meet will be streamed somedays via Flotrack, some days via Mt. Sac itself.

Men's Steeple - 9:15 pm EST (6:15 Pacific)
In the men's steeple, 2008 US Olympian Billy Nelson will face 2009 NCAA runnerup Hilary Bor of Iowa Sate amongst others. After running 8:21 in 2008, Nelson only managed an 8:35 last year.
Women's Steeple - 9:30 pm EST (6:30 Pacific)
Former Rice runner Lenny Waite
of Great Britain, who was 5th at NCAAs last year and 2nd at the British
champs leads the field. She has a pb of 9:50 and may be challenged by
Japan's Yoshika Arai.
Women's 10k - 10:00 pm EST (7:00 Pacific)
Look for Oklahoma State's Felicity Milton
who was 8th in the 5k indoors at NCAAs to run away from the field.
According to the seed times, she'll be challenged by Princeton's Reilly Kiernan and Sarah Cummings but neither one of them made NCAA indoors.
Men's 10k: Two NCAA Champions Square Off 10:40 pm EST (7:40 PAC)
The most interesting thing to look for here in our minds is to see how Robert Cheseret looks in the second race comeback. Cheseret is best known for two things. One he is Bernard Lagat's
brother. Two, he is the most decorated Pac-10 runner in history as he
was first 3-time Pac Runner of the Year in (2004, 2005, and 2006) as he
won an unprecedented 8 Pac 10 titles, capturing the NCAA 5k in 2004 and
10k in 2005 in the process.
In our book, however, he will always be known as the man who beat now American 5k record holder Dathan Ritzenhein in a 5k even though Cheseret fell down in the middle of the race. Yes, that's how dominant Cheseret was early in his college career. He fell down and still beat Ritz to capture the 2004 NCAA 5,000 title.
Cheseret didn't compete at all in 2008 or 2009 but now he's in the US Army and on his way to US citizenship. He also dreams of the 2012 Olympics. He ran a 13:55 a few weeks ago so clearly he's not yet in top form but it will be interesting to see how he does.
But he's not the only NCAA champ in the field. Galen Rupp slayer, Shadrack Songok, is the top seed in the field. Songok won the 2007 NCAA title over Rupp and then repeated in 2008 before basically taking last year off.
Pros Stephen Haas and Nate Jenkins as well as William & Mary's Jon Grey are some of the top American born runners in the race.
