2010 NCAA Cross Country Rankings: Stanford Men, Villanova Women #1 Heading Into Conference Meets
By LetsRun.com
October 26, 2010
Heading into this weekend's crucial conference action, eight weeks into the 2010 NCAA XC season, the top two spots in the LetsRun.com NCAA Super Polls are just as they were in the preseason with the Stanford men and Villanova women #1, with the Oklahoma State men and Oregon women #2.
Men: Stanford and OK State Solidify The Top 2 Spots
On the men's side, Stanford still has nearly double the first place votes as Oklahoma State (in the coaches polls, Stanford and OSU are basically tied with Stanford with a 1 point lead over OSU). Stanford and OSU moved further ahead of their competitors compared to the preseason polls. In the preseason poll, Stanford had 44.8% of the first place votes and Oklahoma
State had 24.6%. Now Stanford has 59.6% of the first place votes and Oklahoma State has 31.0%. Northern Arizona was the big loser in first place votes as they had 15.6% of the first place votes in the preseason poll and now have only 1.8%.
Northern Arizona however still has support with the LetsRun.com faithful. NAU is #6 in the LetsRun.com polls, but only #11 in the coaches poll. That 5 place difference was the biggest difference between our polls and the coaches polls for any school in the top 10.
Women: Villanova Looking Good to Repeat
Gina Procaccio's Villanova squad was somewhat of a surprise winning NCAAs last year, but this year they
are poised to repeat. They have a commanding lead over #2 Oregon in the women's side.
The big loser in the women's polls was the Washington women who fell 5 spots from #3 to #8. Before you think that's a big fall realize in the coaches' polls they Huskies have fallen all the way to #20. Greg Metcalfe's Huskies were the national champs two years ago and had a perfect score at the Pac 10 meet. Last year they were heavy favorites heading into the NCAA meet but finished third. This year they have been hurt badly by the transfer of NCAA runner-up Kendra Schaff
to UNC, but the LetsRun.com faithful still have some faith in the Huskies.
We have to extend our apologies and congratulations to the Arizona women. The Wildcats are #6 in the latest NCAA Coaches poll. Where are they in the LetsRun.com polls? Unfortunately they were left out as a voting option. To make voting easier we try and list 50-60 schools instead of 300 and we screwed up and left out Arizona. James Li's (Bernard Lagat's
coach) Wildcat women were 30th at the NCAA meet last year and started the season 25th in the coaches polls but after their second place finish at PreNCAAS are primed to contend for the podium at NCAAs.
How good is Stanford? All 21 voters in the LetsRun.com Pac 10 poll picked the Cardinal to beat the #3 nationally ranked Oregon Ducks at this weekend's Pac 10 meet. Some of you think Vin Lananna can work his magic and have Oregon win the national title, but none of you think they're going to beat Stanford this weekend.
The ACC meet looks to be a very competitive four team battle and the SEC meet a 3 team battle.
Women's Conference Polls: Show Us Some Love
The voting as usual was pretty sparse in our women's conference polls so we won't make too many inferences except you need to vote more!
We'll reopen our polls next week in advance of the NCAA Regional qualifiers for the national championships in Terre Haute.
