Lel, Adere Win Mardi Gras Half Marathon

Kenyan Martin Lel defeated countryman Sammy Wanjiru in the Mardi Gras Half Marathon in New Orleans, LA this morning. Lel, a former World Marathon Major champion, ran 61:07 in a promising return to action from injury. Current World Marathon Major champion, Olympic champion, and half marathon world record-holder Sammy Wanjiru finished only seven seconds in front of former University of Oregon runner and debut half-marathoner Shadrack Biwott, 61:33 to 61:40. Irish national half marathon record holder Martin Fagan finished fourth in a solid 62:11.

In the women's race, Ethiopian Berhane Adere won a close race in a quick 67:52 over former Providence College runner Kim Smith (67:55) of Ireland  New Zealand. Adere's time was the fastest half marathon by a women in America and both her and Smith's times were national records.
