Gay Over Powell, Alysia Johnson Wins 800m, Leo Manzano Impresses
The highlight of the Gateshead Diamond League Athletics Meet in the UK was the showdown at 100m between Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay. Powell has been unbeatable in 2010 on the track and Gay has been injured and in his first race back last week at Prefontaine was beaten in the 200m by Walter Dix.
Saturday's meet was the first time this year any of the big 3: Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell or Usain Bolt had squared off.
When it was all said in done on Saturday, Powell got a tremendous start and was clear of Gay. Gay, however, did not quit and clawed back at Powell, just nipping him at the line by .02. The loss does nothing to diminish Powell's reputation for choking not performing in the bigger races. He'll get a chance to redeem himself next week as he takes on the Big Kahuna, Usain Bolt at 100m in Paris.
The big winner on the American side was Alysia Johnson. The US champ powered away from the field to win the 800m and go sub-2:00 once again. Leo Manzano impressed in the 1,500m, battling Olympic champ Asbel Kiprop to the line. Galen Rupp ran a 13:10.05 PR in the men's 5k. Ben Bruce ran an 8:22.88 PR in the steeple.

Men's 1,500m: Asbel Kiprop Edges The Good Leo Manzano
The USA's Leo Manzano has made an Olympic team and won 5 NCAA titles and is a fierce competitor, but sometimes a different Leo shows up. Leo was last at Pre this year by 9 seconds, last last year at the adidas meet by 8 seconds, 2nd to last at Pre last year. The good Leo Manzano showed up in Gateshead and a week after finishing more than 100m behind Asbel Kiprop at the Prefontaine mile, Leo was battling down the homestretch with Kiprop for the win.
Coming onto the final straight, Kiprop was in
front and he started
to pull away. However, he had Augustin Choge, who was 2-for-2 in Diamond League 1,500s this year, still giving chase, and then there was Manzano going wide and pumping furiously after Kiprop. Manzano and Choge were gaining on Kiprop but Kiprop had just enough to hold them off for the win in 3:33.34 to Choge and Manzano's 3:34.51 (Choge was given 2nd over Manzano).
Manzano clearly likes the Gateshead track as he won here last year, but that was against a lesser quality field. This was a Diamond League
meet
and a great run by Manzano.

Men's 5k: No One Breaks 13:00, Rupp And Farah PR
This race was billed as an attempt for Britain's Mo Farah to break Dave Moorcroft's 28-year-old British record of 13:00.41 (yes, a Brit ran 13:00 nearly 30 years ago). That sort of race would bode well for American Galen Rupp becoming the 5th American in the last year to go sub-13:00.
The pacing at the 1,600 (4:07 for the rabbits) was right on, but then things started to slow. With 3 laps to go, the field needed to close in about 3:00 to break 13:00. Surely doable, but it seemed likely at this point Farah or America's Galen Rupp was not going to win the race and go sub-13:00. Rupp was out of contention before the bell and Farah was soon out of it as well. Coming down the final straight, four familiar faces would battle it out. The four were Vincent Chepkok (who
ran 12:51.45
in Doha but has been 5th in 2 Diamond League races since then), Eliud Kipchoge (who won in 12:51 in Doha but had struggled mightily until a 4th at Pre last week), Imane Merga (wins in Oslo and Rome, 3rd at Pre) and Tariku Bekele (winner at Pre). Bekele was the first to crack and Chepkok had just enough to turn the tables on Kipchoge, who beat him in Doha. Chepkok got the win by .04 with Merga another .24 back.
Farah finished in a PR of 13:05.66 and Rupp got a PR of 13:10.05.
Please take a moment to remember a Brit ran 13:00 28 years ago. A Westerner should be under 12:50 by now for sure.

Men's 3,000m Steeple: Ben Bruce PR
For a Diamond League meet, this was an incredibly weak field. In the end, Linus Chumba (who ran 8:11 in 2005 but was only 12th in Doha) got the win comfortably over Michael Kipyego (8:09 best, 8th in Doha). The biggest surprise was American Ben Bruce in 3rd lowering his PR from 8:26.08 to 8:22.88.

Women's 800m: Alysia Johnson Dominates Down The Homestretch
Alysia Johnson has shown she is back on form in 2010 (world indoor bronze, USATF 800m champ). She "struggled" at Pre last week, only finishing 5th but running a PR 1:58.84. On Saturday, she dominated down the homestretch and pulled away for the comfortable win over Halima Hachlaf. Haven't heard of Hachlaf? She ran 1:58.40 to win in Rome, so this is a nice win for Johnson. Former world champ Janeth Jepkosgei and
2009 US star Maggie Vessey were well beaten.

Last race out, Uceny became the #10 American all-time and she contended for the win here versus Dobriskey, who got the surprise silver last year at Worlds. Dobriskey, however, has a great finish and was able to pull away from Uceny over the final 100. The finish was similar to earlier in the week in Lausanne when Uceny ran 4:02, as Dobriskey beat her there as well.

Men's 100: Gay Chases Down Powell
Usain Bolt may get all the attention and Asafa Powell may be tearing up the track in 2010, but Tyson Gay reminded the world on Saturday that he is very, very good.
The Gay-Powell showdown lived up to its billing. Powell got a tremendous start and was well clear of Gay. With Powell's top-end speed clearly this one was over? Not so fast. Tyson Gay reminded us all he's a 9.69 guy, as he kept fighting and nipped Powell right at the line, winning with 9.94 to 9.96. The race is an equivalent to a 9.83 without any wind a pretty damn good run. The top mark in the world this year is Bolt's and Powell's 9.82, although Powell did run a 9.83 into the wind.

Men's 200m: Dix Gets 3rd 200m Win In A Week
Walter Dix beat Tyson Gay at 200m on Pre last weekend and followed that up with a 19.86 win on Thursday in Lausanne, so it might be natural that he was a bit tired on Saturday with his 3rd 200m in a week. Dix got the win but it was a narrow win over Wallace Spearmon and Jaysuma Ndure of Norway.
