University of Colorado Grad Sara Vaughn to Run for adidas
June 16, 2009
Press Release

Athlete management firm Boulder Wave, Inc., and adidas have announced agreement on sponsorship for 2008 University of Colorado graduate Sara Vaughn for the coming year.

Vaughn, who turned 23 last month, has been on a tear this spring, with PB’s in each of her last five outdoor competitions. In this stretch, she has improved her marks to 57.93 for 400m, 2:04.75 for 800m, and 4:15.65 for 1500m. In addition, she took third place in the inaugural USATF National One-Mile Road Championship in Minneapolis on May 7th.

This is the first sponsorship deal of Vaughn’s post-collegiate career, and it will cover her through the end of May 2010. Under the terms of the agreement, Sara will wear adidas shoes and apparel in all of her competitions and training, with adidas providing an annual stipend and performance incentives.

Sara Vaughn comments: “I'm very excited about the support from adidas. I was proud to wear their uniform for the first time last weekend and look forward to representing them at the national championships this month. I've enjoyed working with adidas so far. With their support I look forward to continuing improvements in my running career. I'm very happy to be wearing 'three stripes' and they seem happy to have me as well. They've given me an important opportunity to realize my goal of being a professional track athlete. I also want to really thank the Boulder Running Company, which gave me great transitional support in the past year since I graduated from CU.”

Spencer Nel, the Head of Global Sports Marketing: Running/Track & Field at adidas comments: “Sara is exactly the type of dynamic young up-and-coming athlete we like here at adidas. We are looking forward to working with her and supporting her any way we can as she pursues her athletic career.”

Having qualified for both the 800m and 1500m at this month’s U.S. national championships, which will also serve as the selection meet for the 2009 World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Sara and coach Jay Johnson are now prepping in Colorado. “I'm really looking forward to the national championships as another stepping stone in my career. I'll be looking for new PRs. My plan is to make it safely through to the final and then be as competitive as possible in the final.”

Sara lives in Black Hawk, Colorado, with her husband Brent, a 13:18 5,000m runner, and their daughter Ciara, who will turn three years old in September.

Sara signed with Boulder Wave as her management partner in March 2009. While best known for the success of its marathoners, including 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medalist Constantina Dita, Boulder Wave also has represented a strong core of middle-distance athletes, such as 2004 Athens 1500m bronze medalist Maria Cioncan of Romania; 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships 800m gold medalist Olga Cristea of Moldova; and Yuriko Kobayashi of Japan, who was the world’s fastest junior 1500m runner in 2007 and last season won her first ever IAAF Grand Prix meet.
