SNEAKING BENEATH THE SLIGHTLY COMPLEX RADAR OF WORLD ROAD RECORDS, THE 3RD RAK HALF MARATHON CLOCKS UP MEN’S 15km AND 20km WORLD MARKS

Ras Al Khaimah FEBRUARY 20TH, 2009

Kenya’s Patrick Makau not only won the third RAK Half Marathon today with the second fastest time in history, but it has emerged he did after all, break the world record for 20km en route. His time at 20km was 55:38 – fully ten seconds faster than the previously accepted mark of Haile Gebrselassie.

“The Emperor” set the time of 55:48 when running in Phoenix, Arizona on 15th January 2006. A 20km time of 55:31 by Samuel Wanjiru, during a half marathon in The Hague on 17th March 2001, did not have a manual timer present to ratify the performance - then, a stipulated requirement for full world record ratification.

While he successfully defended his RAK title from twelve months ago, 23 year old Makau was today headed by Deriba Merga (ETH) at the 15km point by just one second (41:29 to 41:30) – and it is therefore the 25 year old Ethiopian who has equaled the world record of Felix Limo, set at Nijmegen on 11th November 2001.
