LSU Women Open up 2008 Outdoor Track Season
Ranked No. 1 NEW ORLEANS The LSU Lady
Tigers open up the outdoor campaign ranked as the top team in the women's
USTFCCCA Division I Preseason Outdoor Track and Field National Rankings,
the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced
this afternoon. The Lady Tigers have a strong contingent
of sprinters and hurdlers which should keep them at the top of the rankings
all year long. LSU finished second at last years outdoor national
championships. Coming in at No. 2 in the preseason
rankings is Arizona State. The Sun Devils have won three straight
national track and field titles (07 indoor/07 outdoor and 08
indoor) and will be looking to make it four-in-a-row in June.
Following the Sun Devils this week is third-ranked Virginia Tech.
The Hokies finished 21st at the national meet in 2007. Fourth-ranked Texas A&M and fifth-ranked
Southern California complete the womens top five. UCLA begins the next five at No. 6
this week, with BYU coming in at No. 7. Penn State and Stanford follow the
Cougars at Nos. 8 and 9 respectively, followed by Michigan who rounds
out the top ten in the womens rankings. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings
are released on Wednesdays during the outdoor season. The rankings are
compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track
and Field Championships will be held June 11-14th, 2008 in
Des Moines, Iowa. Florida State is this weeks top-ranked
