Recap of 2008 Millrose Games High School Miles
by: LetsRun.com
February 1, 2008
*Main 2008 Millrose Recap Here

Millrose is packed full of high school races. That is for a variety of reasons. #1) Fans. High school kids running at Madison Square Garden means a lot of relatives and friends coming to watch and buying tickets. #2) The high school races are now some of the most exciting races. High school runners often don't have the best of tactics, a ton of youthful exuberance, and that makes for great racing. The loudest the crowd has been the last two years has been for the High School Boy's Mile. Recaps of the two high school miles below.

Girls Mile: Jillian Smith Wins for 2nd Week in a Row
Kristin Reese of Carmel, NY, the winner of the New Balance mile, took the lead at the gun and pushed a fast pace (71.43) for the first 400. Reese would hold the lead for the first 3 quarters (3:40.79) but Reebok Boston girls' mile champ Jillian Smith was on her shoulder, with Cory McGee in position as well. It was a 3 girl race.

Smith made her move a little over 4 minutes into the race with 2 laps to go. She blasted into the lead and just like that the race was over. She extended her lead to the finish winning comfortably in 4:50.87, as McGee over took Reese for 2nd (4:55.52 and 4:56.21 for 2nd and 3rd).

Boys Mile: Kyle Merber Gets it Done

Time to Party
Nick Crits played the role of the sacrificial lamb as he took it out in a suicidal 59.2. The pace slowed at 800 to 2:06 and Peter Dorrell took the lead. Dorrell led through the 3/4 of a mile as the crowd started getting louder and louder (it seems each runner brings about a 20 person cheering section and they manage to get everyone else pumped up). Doug Smith tried to come up to the front, but Kyle Merber would make the decisive move. Merber went to the front with 1 3/4 laps remaining (145 meters a lap) and would keep it till the finish getting a comfortable win in 4:13.86. Bobby Andrews moved up to 2nd nearly a second back.
