Oregon Continues to Top Division I
Mens XC Poll NEW ORLEANS Running without top runner and 2008 Olympian Galen Rupp, the Oregon Ducks put on a gutsy performance in Eugene as the Ducks captured the team title in the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Saturday. The performance, which showed the depth of the Duck runners, was good enough to keep Oregon atop the polls this week as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the mens top 30 on Tuesday. Oregon took the meet title with 49 points besting fourth-ranked Portland and sixth-ranked Alabama in the process. Portlands David Kinsella won the individual title and was followed by teammate Alfred Kipchumba in second to lead the Pilots to 56 team points. Both Oregon and Portland will take the next weekend off before heading to Terre Haute for the Pre-Nationals meet hosted by Indiana State. Remaining steadfast at No. 2 this week in the polls is Oklahoma State who hosted the Cowboy Jamboree over the weekend. OSU won the mens meet title for the second consecutive year, though they were running without one of their top performers in John Kosgei. Despite the injury to Kosgei, the Cowboys managed to finish third, fourth, and fifth overall in the individual race. Colorado comes in at No. 3 this week (no change) after winning their 18th consecutive Rocky Mountain Shootout title. CU was led by junior transfer Jordan Kyle who ran his first race at altitude finishing second overall for the Buffs. The Badgers of Wisconsin moved up one spot in the mens poll this week to fifth. Iona College is ranked seventh behind Alabama, followed by Georgetown, Michigan, and Stanford to round out the top ten in the mens poll. Moving up 13 spots in the poll this week is Florida State which is coming off of an impressive performance in South Bend at the Notre Dame Invitational. The Seminoles bested several top programs in the process scoring 81 team points. FSU was led by senior All-American Luke Gunn, who set a new Florida State 8k record in his fourth place finish. Auburn also moved up in the poll this week improving five spots from No. 21 to No. 16 following the win in the Mel Rosen Orange race at the Auburn Invitational. Elkanah Kibet led the Tigers to the win as he picked up his second individual title in as many weeks. No. 20 Texas A&M also improved several spots this week (eight) following a third place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. Transfer Shadrack Songok led the Aggies as he finished the 8k course in just over 23 minutes. The 2008 Division I Cross Country National meet will be held on November 24th, 2008 and hosted by Indiana State University. The voting panel for the USTFCCCA Division I Mens National Poll consists of
the elected executive committee and regional representatives of the USTFCCCA
and is conducted by Don Kopriva.
