Tirunesh Dibaba opts not to defend world 5000m title
by: Ethiopian Athletics Federation
August 28, 2007

Ethiopia’s double world 10000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba will not be defending her world 5000m title.

In a statement she gave to the EAF today, Tirunesh said she has not recovered from the women’s 10000m final on Saturday night. “I waited to see myself in training,” he said. “But after consultations with my coaches and reexamined my health, I have decided not to contest the race.”

Her decision means that there will be no repeat of her clash with compatriot and Olympic champion Meseret Defar, but the 21-year old said she was confident that Meseret and other members of the Ethiopian team, Meselech Melkamu and Gelete Burka, are capable of continuing the winning streak for Ethiopia.

“I am confident that Meseret, Gelete, and Meselech will run very well,” she said. “They are all very good runners.”

Speaking about the decision, Ethiopian team technical leader Dube Jillo said that the EAF was fully behind Tirunesh. “We respect her decision,” he said. “She is a very strong athlete and she is quite young. I am confident that there will be other chances for her to double once she has treatment and completely recovers from the stitches.”
