by: USATF Communications
July 23, 2007
*Results

RIO DE JANEIRO - Sara Slattery and Ed Moran brought home the gold in the women's 10,000 meters and men's 5,000m, respectively, and April Steiner won silver on day two of athletics competition at the 2007 Pan American Games at Jao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Also at the track on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Clifford Sobel and his family attended the athletics competition, sitting with the American contingent and cheering on the competing athletes.

The 2005 NCAA champion, Slattery (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the women's 10,000m in spectacular fashion, running with the lead pack, sitting in third, for the first 6km, going through the 5km mark in 16:52.28 unofficially. Slattery moved into the lead with 4km to go and never looked back. She crossed the finish line in a Pan American Games record 32 minutes 54.41 seconds. The previous record of 32:56.51 was set in 1999 by Nora Rocha of Mexico. Emily McCabe (Queensbury, N.Y.) ran a strong race to finish sixth in a personal best 33:39.61.

The second gold medal of the evening came from William & Mary graduate Ed Moran (Dayton, N.J.), who also set a Pan American Games record in winning the men's 5,000m in a personal best 13:25.60. The previous record of 13:30.35 was set in 1995 by Armando Quintanilla of Mexico. Moran had sat in fourth place for most of the race and then surged with 1,000m to go to take the lead.

April Steiner (Mesa, Ariz.) claimed the silver medal in the women's pole vault on Monday with her clearance of 4.50 meters/14 feet 9 inches. Steiner used all three attempts to gain clearances at 4.30m/14-1.25 and 4.40m/14-5.25. The bar was then moved to 4.50m/14-9 at which Steiner had two misses. She passed on her third attempt and the bar was moved to 4.55m/14-11, where Steiner recorded her third miss.

In other field event action, 2007 U.S. champion Suzy Powell (Modesto, Calif.) took fourth in the women's discus throw with her toss of 59.08m/193-10, with Summer Pierson (Glendale, Calif.) just behind her in fifth with a throw of 56.03m/183-10. In the women's hammer throw, 2007 U.S. runner-up Kristal Yush (Groton, Conn.) placed fourth with 66.47m/218-1 and 2007 U.S. champion Brittany Riley (Flossmoor, Ill.) was fifth with 65.49m/214-10.

At the conclusion of day 1 in the men's decathlon, Ryan Harlan (Houston, Texas) is sitting in fourth place with 4,091 points and Chris Boyles (Carlisle, Penn.) is in fifth with 4,027.

In the men's 400m prelims, Lionel Larry (Compton, Calif.) took second in heat 1 in 45.32 and Jamaal Torrence (Orlando, Fla.) won heat 2 in 45.86, both will move on to the semifinals. In the women's 400m hurdles, both Nicole Leach (Philadelphia, Penn.) and Sheena Johnson (Stafford, Va.) won their semifinal heats in 55.77 and 55.55, respectively. ATHLETE QUOTES

Sara Slattery, women's 10,000m champion - I felt good through 5k, the race got very tough after that. I knew in order to beat my competitors I would have to push at the end, The cheers really pushed me on. At ten laps to go I started to push. After Nationals, my training went very well and I knew that if I was in the lead with one lap to go that I would have the kick to win. Any time you can represent your country and win a medal for Team USA it's an honor and it's amazing.

Emily McCabe, 6th place - women's 10,000m - I was happy with my race. I really wanted to medal though. But I set a personal record so I am happy with that. The competition was tough, these women are pretty accomplished. I'm really happy for Sara, her race was amazing.

Ed Moran, men's 5,000m champion - It set up well early. My strategy was to see what the pace was after 2k. I knew as long as I stayed in contact (with the leaders), I could close. I decided to go with 1,000m left because I felt that could take the legs out of the big kickers. I knew as soon as I committed that I had to commit to the finish. There are too many good runners in Central and South America to wait. There's nothing like an energetic crowd screaming for the last four minutes, even if they're not screaming for you. I didn't expect it at all (to run under 13:30). We went out fast from the beginning. It was an honest race and it really makes for exciting racing.

Kristal Yush, 4th place - women's hammer - The ring was a little slow but it was very exciting to be here. I've never been to a meet this big before. It was super exciting. Competing at this level is so much fun.

Brittany Riley, 5th place - women's hammer - It went. I should have thrown farther. I didn't feel like I had as much power as I usually do.

Lionel Larry, men's 400m prelims - It was all right. I haven't raced in three weeks, it was good to get the first one out of the way. It was ok.

Jamaal Torrence, men's 400m prelims - It was good to get the first round out of the way, get the jitters out and now I'll come out tomorrow and do it.

Miki Barber, women's 100m 1st round and semifinals - It was a good race, I'm happy to run 11.1 again. I was behind from the start but was able to come back and win my heat.

Mechelle Lewis, women's 100m 1st round and semifinals - I'm just trying to get through the rounds, trying to stay focused and get through the next race.

J-Mee Samuels, men's 100m 1st round and semifinals - My race was rough from the start, but I came back and got third.

I came out better than in prelims, now I need to rest up for the final.

Darvis Patton, men's 100m 1st round and semifinals - This one (1st round) was fairly easy, it will get tougher from here.

Nicole Leach - women's 400m hurdles semifinal - It went well. I'm pleased with my race. I haven't raced since USA's. I was just trying to get the kinks out and get used to getting around the track again.

Sheena Johnson, women's 400m hurdles semifinal - I was real relaxed, just trying to win my heat to get a good lane for the final. I was a little tired, I had a hard trip getting here, but hopefully the next two days will give me plenty of time to recover.

Bashir Ramzy, men's long jump qualifying - I qualified for the final but don't know what place I'm sitting in right now. I felt flat today but I will be ok for the final.

Morgan Uceny, women's 800m semifinal - It wasn't good. I felt really relaxed but I just didn't have that last gear today. It's been a good experience though. I just wish I would have run better.

Alysia Johnson, women's 800m semifinal - I was very comfortable. At 600m I thought they were further away and then I looked over my shoulder and they were closer than I thought so I sped up a little. I just remained constant after that through the finish. I wasn't trying to make any statements tonight, just qualify for finals. We'll see the results tomorrow.
