Dr. Bill Stegemoller, Former Souther Indiana Coach, Dies We received the sad news that former S. Indiana Coach Dr. Bill Stegemoller died from cancer yesterday. Below is the email from current S. Indiana coach, Mike Hillyard. Our thoughts and prayers are with his former athletes and family. I am saddened to inform you that Dr. Bill Stegemoller,
former men’s cross country and track & field coach and Mathematics
Professor at the University
of Southern Indiana,
passed away early this morning. Bill was diagnosed with lung cancer on December
27th. Last month, he was the first coach inducted into the University of Southern Indiana Athletics Hall of Fame.
Later this spring, he will be inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference
Hall of Fame. Bill initiated the Cross Country program at USI (which was Indiana State
University – Evansville at the time ) in 1979. Prior
to his 19 year coaching career at USI, Bill coached Vincennes University
to 2 consecutive NJCAA National titles. Under his guidance, USI won 11
GLVC Cross Country titles, advanced to 12 NCAA II Cross Country national
championships (including 3rd and 5th place team finishes
in 1982 and 1983), and coached Elly Rono to the individual title in 1997.
In the spring of 1998, Bill’s final season as coach, his athletes won the
men’s 10,000 meters at both the Drake Relays (Keil Kaiser) and Penn
Relays (Elly Rono). Bill also served as meet director when USI played
host to the NCAA II Cross Country National Championships in 1997, and as clerk
